-and-a-half is what Mills as the starting PG is. Not even mentioning the 50M reasons why....

If the Spurs wanted a stop gap until Murray was ready, they should've gone cheaper.
I suspect Murray is getting traded. That's why Spurs drafted White.

Trading Murray away because they've just drafted a poor man's Brogdon? If true, that's kinda ed up.

Why draft a first round PG if there isn't a need? Why is there a need if Murray is locked up long term? What position does Murray play?

    1. Trade Danny to CLE in S&T for Korver and Cedi Osman.

    2. Let PHX whiff on Milsap and reengage talks for LMA. Failing that, kick tires on TOR's Valincinous. Failing that just hold his ass.

    3. Resign Pau, sign Hanga, sign Patty at end.

Not possible when you have an MVP candidate like Leonard in the roster.

Good questions. I've been wondering why PATFO have been hoarding oversized point guards recently, like Fathead, Hanlan, Dijon, and now Mini Fathead.

Perhaps Poop's play book heavily favors point guards, with plays freeing up the point guard to score. Big men are there to set screens, space the floor, and occasionally play Four Down. And wings' jobs are to space the floor or run isos. After all, Poop used to be a point guard.

Free agent guard Jrue Holiday has reached agreement on 5-year, $126M deal to stay with New Orleans, agent Jason Glushon tells ESPN.

Why tank ? See what Murray, Anderson have to offer. See what Parker look like after injury. Preserve as much cap space as you can get, and redo failing of signing FA in summer 2018, while still being top seed in western conference.

Isn't Philadelphia interested in big money deals for 1 year ? Maybe they pay Gasol 16 mil ? Embiid surely need decent vet backup, and they can spend that money on Gasol. That would be great for Spurs

They need to improve and if they don't do it this year, then putting on money longer term hurts them beyond this year.

Who'd have guessed that? Never saw it coming.

I hate to say it (again) DPG, but this is the chickens coming home to roost for last season. And the shtick about top players not wanting to come join a sinking ship? There's some truth to that.

You never would say it out loud, but "preserving flexibility for next year" was always going to mean biting the bullet somewhere along the line. Keep signing longer-term contracts, and exceeding the cap, and the flexibility left isn't enough to make a really big splash.

Injured ass Jrue holiday getting 25mil a year. GHill and Lowry likely getting near the same money soon...

But Spurfan complaining about Patty getting half that when he's a solid 6th man off the bench that can play with DeJounte or White, smh.

I think they see White as steady do a bit of everything Manu replacement type, who they will pair with MVPatty. With the fleet footed Hanga doing the tough D duties.

The money is not the issue - it's the results that matter. It's like buying the 3 12-packs of Coke just because they are on sale when you really don't need them.

I don't think most of these fans realize how the values of the players are now inflated due to the new CBA and TV money. They are thinking in their minds what these guys would have been worth on the open market a few years ago before the new CBA which is around 10-15 mil a year. After the Conley deal last year I knew all these guys like Holiday,Lowry,Hill were going to get overpaid in the access of at least making 20 mil a year.

I don't know what new revelation Pop has with small ball play. Apparently he did wonders when he played both Parker and Mills at the same time. I think its Mills inability to score unless he gets a good assist. Parker is just so much better as a passer.

Regarding Murray, he definitely isn't a shooter and I don't recall him also to being a good passer. He's a good one one one player and has length to be good defensively. I am unsure if the league has bought into the hype about him, so who knows what his trade value is. Spurs will likely showcase him early in the season and trade him with Aldridge.

So the alternative was throwing money at frontcourt guys like Millsap and hope we get past the Dubs that way? I don't see a move out there that will get the Spurs past Golden State next season, same as any other team.

If the Spurs did this to make Patty the starter for the next 2 or 3 years or the FO still gives TP 5+ mil next season then I agree this move was unwise.

If it anyway helps the Spurs move past TP, have Patty be the short-term bridge to Murray being the full-time starter, then ease into a Manu type 6th man role afterwards, I'm perfectly fine with the deal.

(I do enjoy the various metaphors you've thrown out about the deal since yesterday tho, Deepy)

And in reality it's on sale because it's past due and fizzed out.

Me too. They are flowing nicely.

It's not the end of the world at all; like you said. I've given my 2-cents on my concerns and they mainly stem from knowing that Mills really is not very playable in the playoffs or as a starter. His ceiling is capped hard. But we do know he's valuable in a 6th man role especially in the regular season.

But the team HAS to improve. The other moves they make may very well do that - but it's harder to see one of the leagues worst guard rotations improving at the moment and that concerns me because now THEY HAVE TO make up ground elsewhere.

Murray blossoming can help that issue for sure and I am on board with not spending on PG like crazy and developing Murray; but yes, that means they have to truly improve talent wise in the frontcourt to make a leap.

I have no issue with Mills. While I think in this market it's a discount based on raw production, hes clearly as valuable as the contract and I think it accurately reflects his on the court warts.

He's a good player to have, even at that money if he were someone that was solely a regular season minutes soaker. Unfortunately, for SA's build, that is not the case and he gets exposed in the playoffs vs any team that matters.

Kawhi wasn't a shooter his first few years, nor was Parker when he was young.

Pop signed Mills so he can have somebody to go out to dinner with when the Spurs are in the road.

I went to a couple of the Spurs last regular season games. Sat right behind the Spurs bench. During pre-game and half time warmups I specifically watched Murray shooting. Both games he was clanging mid range shots off the rim. Sure as something's improved this summer.
