Think Spurs were his third choice. Thunder were rumored first, but didn't have access to MLE and moved onto Patterson. Heat (lives in Miami) were likely second, but choose Olynyk over him.

Don't know what to make of this . . .

    - On the one hand, they needed to raise their ceiling and if he looks reasonably well recovered, it's a low risk, somewhat high reward gamble because the philosophical change of two bigs to one could improve the offense. Most perimeter based skills he was average at as an SF, he should be above average at as a PF and the same goes for Aldridge going from PF to C.

    - On the other hand, getting further and further away from "Spurs basketball" with a third ISO forward.
    - There is no rim roller/glass cleaner in the starting five and none of the former in the rotation period
    - Is Aldridge on board with less minutes/touches/primarily playing C? Is Gasol on board with less minutes? Will Gay, in search of one last big pay day, be willing to sacrifice counting stats?

Then there's the matter of too many rotation bodies . . .

    - Does Gay free them up to trade Aldridge for a pick/prospect?
    - Does this mean they're less likely to match on Simmons or Ginobili is retiring?
    - If it means none of the three, then that leaves one rotation spot for Anderson/Bertans and Hanga on the outs because the final roster spot will have to go to a true C.
    Excellent points, friend.

i don't know what Gay signing has to do with this. They don't play the same position and the Spurs still need guards.

The Spurs have a lot of guard (Mills, Murray, White, Forbes and Green with Parker still on the roster). Given that they have one player on the roster who can even pretend to play the five right now, they'll have to prioritize the front court with their four open slots. They'll not have enough for both Manu and Simmons if even Hanga comes aboard. And it's not obvious that having both (all three) would even make sense after spending on Gay.

How many of those guards mentioned can actually pretend to play the 1? Parker, IF he can comeback healthy.

A comparison of Gay's stats from last season with Kawhi's
    is interesting.

Let's be honest here. Forbes, and probably White, aren't rotation guys. I have more hope for White than Forbes, and Parker's gonna be out at least half the year.

Your'e really looking at something like:

    PG Murray, Mills
SG Green, Murray/Mills?, with the hope you fill this out with Simmons and Manu, or White blows up in a good way

Thinking we're good because we have Forbes and White out there at the guard position is very shortsighted at best.

Mills and forbes are equal imo. Patty cant dribble or create, neither can forbes. Both catch shoot, but i think forbes is a better shooter.

Some of y'all are really overthinking this signing. Injury be damned, we only used the MLE to sign him... it's a low risk, high reward move for a talented player. It's not like it makes us any worse.. Not like we were heavy favorites to win it all next year and now this signing suddenly jeopardizes that
    This.

I hadn't seen this until just a while ago:

“We expect him to be ready to go” for camp, said Gay’s agent, Roger Montgomery. “He's healthy. He's cleared. We don't expect any residuals from the injury.”

Hard to believe that the Spurs had time for their own medical staff to do a proper work-up, but the agent is claiming that he has medically cleared... something.
Well... Rudy G has never really been accused of not caring about his game and showing up out of shape.
He's a gamer, for better, or worse and he'll be at the best he possibly can be, when training camp opens. Let's just hope his best is still good and he doesn't keep coming down with those niggling injuries that prevents gelling with the team, over the season.

I'd probably say Patty is more pesky, as a defender, but that's not really praising his defense.
Just that he sometimes catches a bone with his activity and that's more than Forbes does.

    Otherwise... yeah.

Please name last time spurs had a rim roller or glass cleaner?
    Dedmon . . . last season.

Crowded rotation and lack of roster spots for bigs.

They need better quality, but not quan y. Depending on what happens with Simmons, Ginobili and Forbes, they could have 8 guards on the roster. 3 can and will play some SF, but that's still too many. I don't care how small the league is going or how they intend to play, every team (especially an aging team looking to make a deep run) still needs regular season minute eaters. Right now, they have 2 traditional bigs and might only have a spot for 1 more.

You realize MVPaddy has led the Olympics in scoring and has been a rotation player on elite teams, right? Forbes resume consists of one good RS game against a tanking Dallas team and a good Summer League game.

Funny, my first thought was, Trump, at 3 AM, after his stealth rails in the bathroom, after Melania falls asleep- and he's grasping his celly, turning on Twitter...

    Sitting on the toilet.

liking the signing more and more

rudy has never had the fortune of playing alongside someone with kawhi's talents.

rudy as not the #1 option suits him better.

It'd be a real if they traded Danny now after he's been the only vet Spur doing any talking.

They wouldn't have had the MLE, but depending on how they got the $19 Million in space, they could have signed both.
