I think since they signed Gay using the non-taxpayer exemption that it does matter. They have to stay under the apron to sign Simmons, Pau, Manu, etc.
PATFO will now how to sign everybody that was announced and fit it under the tax. First go Gasol, Simmons deals. Than Mills contract to go over the cap. Gay maybe signed last, because it's MLE.

I would still prefer Hanga over Simmons, considering their price, TBH.
This.
No more Hanga rumors?
He agreed to stay in Spain.
Damn. Now I'm depressed.
Well, thanks for the update.![]()
Kinda weird how quiet things are. Perhaps it's just the calm before the storm. I'm ready.
The Spurs will surely acquire a big man or two. Presently, the team is awfully thin in the front court.
He agreed to sign with Barcelona, what was later matched by Baskonia. He still have an NBA out in his contract.
If the Spurs chooses Simmons over Forbes, Imma be pissed! I'd love to see Forbes get meaningful mins... it's easy to see what he's gonna be if given the green light. that man!
Well, if Spurs can't get Simmons, then they sure can offer Hanga over the $3m per he's being offered overseas. There are two teams in Europe fighting for his services.
Hanga isn't as athletic as Simmons, but he's got Danny Green length.
They can't - they are able to offer Simmons a bigger contract because he's an arenas FA and they've kept his tiny cap hold. In order to offer Hanga the same money they'd need to create cap space, which is impossible now that they've signed Gay for the MLE. They can only give Hanga the BAE ($3.3 mil) or min.
Nice to know they can only offer 300K more for Hanga.
If a S&T with Simmons is possible, a Green, LMA & Simmons package for Fournier and Biyombo would be nice. Orlando gets a fresh start next offseason with Danny andLMA off the books (assuming they opt out) plus a nice deal on Simmons for a couple of years.
Is a Simmons S&T a possibility? Perhaps this is the hold up on our moves.
Might as well trade Kawhi for picks if they're going to tank.
I know I say dumbass , but booooy you take the cake!! Lmmfao
No thanks.
Okay okay, not that deal specifically, but is it possible that we are searching for a S&T package including Danny and Simmons? One intriguing player that would work in that scenario would be Batum.
Batum is way over paid ...
Why would you want to package Green in a deal with Simmons? That means that you have 2 rotation wings that you have to replace. If you want to S&T Simmons that's fine, but don't include another wing. In fact, it used to be on an S&Tthe team doing the signing and trading couldn't package anyone else with the player being traded. That may have changed in the new CBA though.
I think there are a few things that may point at a Simmons sign n trade.
The mle exception was used in gay instead of him, which for example would have unable Simmons to be patty of a sign and trade as you cannot use exceptions for it.
Against this theory us that the BYC will probably apply to Simmons.
I couldn't find restrictions on packaging a sign n trade player in a bigger deal.
May be waiting to see how the Mills deal will be structured in annual raises. If they need to, could start at a lower number and offer him 8% raises. This could keep them below the tax.
If they somehow have room, maybe they go with a higher starting value in year 1 and have declines.
Could look like any of these:
- Low year 1: $11.16 / $12.05 / $12.95 / $13.84 (8% raises)
- Slightly higher: $11.63 / $12.21 / $12.79 / $13.37 (5% raises)
- Flat: $12.50 annually
- Declining: Flip either of the first two, with year 1 salary from $13.37 to $13.84. More flexibility in future
Not sure if you can structure this way, but wonder if you can go 8% decrease then increase again. This could let the contract value be lowest in year 2 (next summer): $12.50 / $11.57 / $12.50 / $13.43
