GOP Favor Dropping Tax Beneficial To Blue States

Republicans aren’t usually big on raising taxes, but they’re really eager to eliminate the federal deduction for state and local taxes.

    Why?

A look at the states that benefit the most from the tax break helps explain it — they are all Democratic strongholds, or so-called blue states.

New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and California top the list of states where taxpayers get the biggest deductions. Not a single Republican-leaning state ranks in the top 10.

“Although Republicans usually recoil at any type of tax increase, cutting this tax break would almost be fun for them,” said Martin Sullivan, chief economist for Tax Analysts.

“It provides massively disproportionate deductions to high-tax states controlled by Democrats.”

which would mean people would suffer "double taxation", state and federal, on the same income.

"double taxation" is the whine the oligarchy has used forever to agitate against taxing both corporate profits and corporate stockholder dividends.

Repugs must know there a Ms of wealthy Repugs in Blue states with state income tax, eg, esp SoCal.

My state doesn't have an income tax. Sure would be nice to have it. I get double and triple taxed on alot of things.

Pretty much. It is a tax increase on Democrats, which is funny.

States without income taxes have to make it up on other ways. Property and Sales taxes usually do it.

I can't think of a worse tax than a property tax. If you have a company that relies on either land or structures to turn a profit your going to get taxed hard by the state, regardless of income. Not to mention tribal land is exempt, there is probably 500-1000 acres of land in my county that is taking off the tax rolls each year. It's a house off cards that's doomed to fail. Is Texas supported primarily by property taxes or how are things done there without an income tax?

I know Nebraska is a bad shape with property taxes, enough to the point that 3/4th of the rental income from land will go to property taxes in some areas.

Texas is mostly property taxes with a business franchise tax.

    Sales tax is about 8.25%

Ironic is the party of "local control", is now passing state laws so cities can't do things like raise property taxes too much, essentially telling local officials what they can, and can't do.

isn't sales tax in TX 6.25% but cities/counties can add up to 2%? Shouldn't you blame the 8.25% on your city/county officials?

FL has 6% sales tax and stupid Miami-Dade county voters voted in 1/2% for Jackson Memorial Hospital (our public hospital) and 1/2% for "mass transit" (which has gone nowhere but of course, they aren't giving us back our 1/2% tax). Our property tax is capped at 3% increase in assessed value from previous year so it's very reasonable and the value is transferable if you switch residences in FL.

I was wondering if that was local tax on top of state. That's really high compared to here but different structures i'm sure. What i hate is living in the country and places see the address and tack on the extra 2% sales tax from the city. Not a huge deal on the small things but spend $5, $10, $25k in equipment and its a lot, especially when it doesn't utilize any local services.

The 6% is state sales tax for all of FL. The extra 1% is additional sales tax ONLY for Miami-Dade county. I usually wait and shop in Broward County when I'm there. We also have back to school and hurricane sales tax holidays when you can stock up on clothes, school and hurricane supplies without paying sales tax.

There are rich donors in blue states who they would piss off massively. Wall Street is full of big dollar donor conservatives.
