Bannon was the symbolic white house connection to Breitbart wing of his base who were basically the only group rabidly defending Trump in the wake of Charlottesville. The mainstream right has all but left the sinking ship.

By axing Bannon, Trump is basically saying he's somewhat ready to reach across the aisle or that he basically used Bannon and his redneck followers to get elected
