90s LA was fun for a student, price differences weren't as high as today (I'm ok but others aren't), people went out much more, watched movies, there wasn't this fear of speaking out to not offend some idiot, women were slimmer and more approachable, music was great, the entire atmosphere was lively compared to today's decay, people were doing instead of being tied to stuck with their eyes in their iphones, working hours were better (with a booming economy). So it isn't about safety but about culture, human interaction and quality of life.
