IRS now sharing information with special counsel Mueller
the Internal Revenue Service is sharing information with special counsel Robert Mueller about top Donald Trump aides,
following a months-long battle between the two en ies over what information the IRS is able to share, CNN reports.
Mueller is investigating as far back as 11 years into former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort’s financial dealings,
which as CNN notes appears to be covered by the special counsel’s directive to look into “any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump,”
as well as “any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation.”
According to CNN, the IRS Criminal Investigation Division has been working in conjunction with the FBI since before the election to review possible financial crimes committed by Manafort.
A former Justice Department official told CNN the IRS is likely sharing “anything tax return-related,” but would require a special subpoena to share tax returns.
