When he opted out of his contract and sought a new one, he backed of the kneeling because he's not truly committed. It probably would've died out, but Trump sounded off, emboldening teams to continue the protest. Eventually, the owners will not want to lose the offended customers, so they order it stopped, and the Players will do it b/c they value their contracts more than the BLM movement and most didn't kneel or care to kneel anyway and only reacted out of peer pressure and Trump unnecessarily dividing the country over the NFL.

Salute? First of all, I'm not in the military. Secondly, there is no official protocol when citizens are at home and hear the National Anthem. , TV networks rarely even showed the anthem until all the nonsense started.
Do you realize there is a US Flag Code which stipulates official protocol during the playing of the National Anthem and displaying of the Flag?
US Flag Code 171 states:
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.

Base or Post movie theaters used to play the anthem before a movie would start. I used to stand with hand over heart at that time. I also remember lifeguards blowing their whistles at 5:30 pm and being asked to get out of the swimming pool at the military officer's club. Patrons would face the direction of the Post flag (which was not visible) and stand with hand over heart as the anthem was played. Cars on base used to stop driving and pull to the side until the anthem was over. People who were walking would stop and do the same. I think a cannon would go off before and after so people would know when to stop or carry on.
This stuff is real for a lot of people. Not some flippant idea.
