Trump Reveals Plans To Host UN Meetings At His Private Golf Club Instead Of Official Headquarters
According to a report in The Washington Post today, initial plans say that Trump is intending to invite foreign leaders to meet with him at his own Trump-branded Bedminster, New Jersey golf club, a move that would break decades of precedent that the meetings take place at the U.N. itself or nearby hotels.
The move would be controversial in several respects.
Besides the obvious conflicts of interest inherent in spending government resources at a property where the president personally profits from every dollar spent,
the idea is seen by many as a slap in the face of the U.N. itself
by a president who has made no secret of the fact that he holds the rest of the world in low regard in comparison to the USA.
Former New Mexico governor and U.N. ambassador, Bill Richardson was appalled at the concept:
“It’s better to do it in the city. Do it at the U.N.,” Richardson said. “Symbolism is important. This is the U.N. There should be an acknowledgment of the importance of the U.N., not snubbing them.”
According to The Post:
“Foreign diplomats are eyeing Trump’s appearance with a mix of anticipation and anxiety.
Some expect an airing of Trump’s “America First” credo and a replay of threats to yank U.S. funding if the vast international body does not cut waste and make reforms.”
The U.N. has always been a body based on formal diplomacy with strict norms of behavior and mutual respect between sovereign nations.
Trump’s plans to require leaders of foreign nations to travel 40 miles west to kiss his proverbial ring at his own resort smacks of imperialism
