I have to say watching the first pre-season game, while the Spurs ultimately suc bed to Pop's not giving a about winning in the pre-season to drop one to the reloaded and mildly impressive Kings, there were some flashes of brilliance from the Spurs young guns. Brimah for instance, could be a great 11th or 12th man specialty garbage basket/shot-blocker. White looked somewhat solid as did Paul. Most impressively, D Murray took it to the ultra talented new Kings backcourt and competed. He is not as talented as those new Kings rookies, D Fox and Frank Mason, but he is athletic, has improved drastically in not turning it over, showed he can draw fouls and create his own shot and has a lot more room to improve. Probably true starter rather than filler material in a year or so. Also Louvergne impessed me. He is like a slightly more athletic, smart but not as smart version of Fabricio Oberto.
Granted it’s only one game and ultimately means little, I was with you till your assessment of Murray. Frank Mason is an older, under sized rookie and should not be obviously better than Murray, a player that is bigger and played meaningful playoff minutes.
I am optimistic one of the young guns will develop to be a contributor and enjoyed their performances in the first preseason game with the exception of Murray.
IDK. I expected a lot more from DJ at this point but I'm not seeing any improvements. (yet??)
Murray is still dribbling too high. This makes the ball travel just that fraction of a second more and timing it makes it easier for good defenders to steal or disrupt his play.
I am starting to think Davis and Dijon both are overrated at their current ability levels.
Specially Davis. He hasn't looked good frankly. He may be a streaky shooter like icyhot in his better days, but he's nowhere near the same defensively... I think Pop could leverage Davis' shooting ability or gravity better but first Davis has to establish that he is better than everyone else competing with him for minutes... and that isn't clear.
Anyways, Dijon is very young and may still develop. I still have hope for him, but comparisons to Kawhi are out of order as he's simply not in the same league. I am thinking he actually has some pressure on him despite being a second season player and still very young. If he wants to reach s om, he probably needs to be a rotation player this year, showing that he's clearly above someone else that can play in the guard spots. It has to be clear, the same way it became clear Kawhi was better than Richard Jefferson back in the day, and the same way Danny back in the day edged SJAX. It's a tall order for Dijon with Tony, Manu, Patty and Danny all at the guard spots ahead of him, but Manu is 40, Tony is coming back from a serious injury and is 36, Danny is a defensive specialist with a streaky shot that has declined in efficiency the past couple of seasons, Patty is a 6'0" shooter in his prime, but not a true playmaker. Time for Dijon to get his name in the mix and really push somebody for minutes FOR REAL. When we can start discussing Dijon vs one of the 4 guys mentioned above, he will have arrived at the scene. While we are all discussing whether it might not be better to give minutes to Bryn Forbes, or B.Paul or White or someone else than him he's still in the project category. So Dijon is still a project. He needs to be better.

i need a larger body of evidence from murray, specifically in meaningful games, to make any conclusions as to what he can provide for the team this season and possibly beyond. for now, he's just a work in progress.
My hope is very low for both Murray and Davis. I'll jump on the bandwagon if things change. Murray has yet to show any improvement though. And Davis defense is awful. Maybe playable vs a crap offensive player. Sagging off of Roberson for instance might be doable.
Just my assessment and just one game, true but Murray HAS improved, especially his ability to get to the rim and to stay with truly lightning quick guards like Mason and Fox on defense. Those guys look like human afterburners up close if you ever get the chance to see their true speed.
No he hasnt. Getting to the rim is his only ability. Its why he got drafted and why he played last year
Sorry, but perhaps I was looking at a different game. Murray was not impressive at all. Actually his performance showed no improvement. I don't care too much about his shot, it will come in time and he can get to basket with ease
; but his defense against rookie point guards were atrocious. He has to start just to get the experience, he needs it. I see why Derrick white was drafted, to hedge their point guard of the future. One of them has to pan out. Count 1 for white, lower expectations and he made his shots, Murray looked like a loss freshman entering highschool.
I mean he’s improved. Last season his handle was worse and he didn’t understand how to run an offense. He was wanted to use his floater all the time. He even played selfish and was sat down in preseason. I like his confidence but it’s just that despite the improvement, he still needs to be better. The season is early and I am sure hen Kawhi gets back, he’s going to look better, but he would do well to focus on defense. He has the physical tools to be better. He’s getting lit up by everybody.
Murray doesn't belong on an NBA floor right now and probably never will. The sooner the F.O. bails on him, the better. I have no idea what they see in him because he hasn't shown a damn thing from my perspective. He's worse than just "not ready yet". He's bad.

Murray will be the starting PG in the future. So many comments remind of how everyone complained that Parker would never learn to shoot the ball, and would never be a starting level PG. So many were wanting Speedy Claxton to be the guy. Then they wanted Beno.
