President Donald Trump is expected to announce soon that he will decertify the landmark international deal to curb Iran’s nuclear program, a senior administration official said on Thursday, in a step that potentially could cause the 2015 accord to unravel.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Trump is also expected to roll out a broader U.S. strategy on Iran that would be more confrontational. The Trump administration has frequently criticized Iran’s conduct in the Middle East.
Trump, who has called the pact an “embarrassment” and “the worst deal ever negotiated,” has been weighing whether it serves U.S. security interests as he faces an Oct. 15 deadline for certifying that Iran is complying with its terms.

President Trump has made a habit of filling important jobs with people dedicated to undermining the laws they’re supposed to administer while pampering the industries they’re supposed to regulate.
His nominee for the Environmental Protection Agency’s top clean air post, William Wehrum, is a retread from the George W. Bush administration with a deep doctrinal dislike of clean air regulations.
His choice to run the White House Council on Environmental Quality is borderline comical: Kathleen Hartnett White, a former Texas official who believes that the main greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, is harmless.
Yet no nomination has been as brazen, as dangerous to public health and as deserving of Senate rejection as that of Michael Dourson to run the E.P.A. office in charge of reviewing chemicals used in agriculture, industry and household products.
Mr. Dourson is a scientist for hire.
A toxicologist and a professor at the University of Cincinnati, he has a
long history of consulting for chemical companies and conducting studies paid for with industry money.
He frequently decided that the compounds he was evaluating were safe at exposure levels that are far more dangerous to public health than levels recommended by the E.P.A., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other agencies.

EPA cancels appearance of scientists at climate change event
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has canceled the appearance of three scientists at an event on Monday in Rhode Island about a report, which deals in part with climate change.
The New York Times reports EPA spokesman John Konkus confirmed on Sunday that agency scientists would not be speaking at the event in Providence. Konkus did not provide an explanation.
The event is designed to draw attention to the health of Narragansett Bay, which forms New England's largest estuary.
A spokesman for Democratic U.S. Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island says the event will go on as planned and the report that EPA scientists helped work on will be released.
In a statement to The Associated Press Sunday night, Reed said "muzzling EPA scientists won't do anything to address climate change."

was questioning Dr. Pascale Wortley, head of the state health department’s HIV epidemiology division, about the large number of Georgians with HIV who are not getting regular care.
She asked: “I don’t want to say the quarantine word, but I guess I just said it.”
She continued:
“Is there an ability, since I would guess that public dollars are expended heavily in prophylaxis and treatment of this condition?
So we have a public interest in curtailing the spread.
What would you advise, or are there any methods legally that we could do that would curtail the spread?”
And finally, she said:
“It seems to me it’s almost frightening, the number of people who are living that are potentially carriers.
Well they are carriers, with the potential to spread, whereas
in the past they died more readily and then at that point they are not posing a risk.
So we’ve got a huge population posing a risk if they are not in treatment.”

relying heavily on a discredited industry theory that claims that trial lawyers routinely bully corporations into class-action settlements.
The Treasury released a 17-page report arguing that the rule, which would prohibit companies from sticking language into financial contracts that prevent consumers from pursuing class-action lawsuits, will “impose extraordinary costs” on businesses without providing benefits from an increase in industry compliance.
Furthermore, the agency asserts that trial lawyers will enjoy a “large wealth transfer” if the rule is adopted.
The rule has gotten increased public attention after the Equifax breach, in which a forced arbitration clause played a role in stoking outrage at the company’s response.
Corporations, meanwhile, have also banded together— you might call it a “class action” — to block the CFPB rule and prevent consumers from the class action option themselves.
The Treasury deployed familiar arguments used by the industry and its mouthpieces. Claims that CFPB used misleading data and failed to recognize that consumers fare better in arbitration (which isn’t true) come directly from a Koch-funded Mercatus Center study, which the Treasury report cites.
But the Treasury’s biggest rhetorical weapon was a theory it called “blackmail settlements.”

Is the FCC purposefully screwing up US school broadband projects?
Schools across the United States are sounding the alarm on what looks su iously like an effort by the federal telecoms regulator to undermine efforts to build new broadband networks.
Under the e-rate program run by the Federal Communications Commission, the FCC, schools that do not have access to a fiber network supplied by the main cable companies can apply for federal funds to build or lease such a network, and so supply much faster internet access to their students.
The issue is at the very heart of the so-called digital divide where people in remote or rural areas of America have limited internet access. FCC chairman Ajit Pai has repeatedly stated that bridging that divide is one of his key priorities.
However, an analysis of the more than 800 applications for "special construction" by a company that provides e-rate consulting services, Funds for Learning, has shown
an extraordinarily high failure rate of requests for funding, often for very minor reasons.
In 2016, for example, of 426 applications for special construction,
52 per cent of them were denied
by the organization that processes them on behalf of the FCC, the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC).
Typically, the rate is around four per cent.

In 2010, four of the individuals involved in the illegal tax-shelter scheme were sentenced to serve between 20 and 36 months in prison, though two of the sentences were later overturned. In 2013,
