I was 19 when I joined the navy, a year out of HS. My family is Navy, my grandpa made me promise I'd be a sailor. So.....yep, sailor.
At 19 I knew nothing about bars, hookers, pimps, that world. How could I? So when we arrived in Olongapo it could have been Mars. I was in a whole other world.
We (always run in packs) walked in this little bar and were attack......BUY ME DRINK, BUY ME DRINK.......what the ? So ya really have no choice, you better BUY A DRINK. At no time is anyone age any kind of factor at all, it's not even thought about. You just assume these girls are old enought to drink and work a bar. To think anyone would.....how old are you....is stupid, and you would have been told...."I old"....anyway.

My thing is the story behind the sound, the origins, the roots of it all. Where did it come from? I own a ton of books on the subject, yep, very interesting. As is trying to track down all those mentioned like a Mamie Smith, Daddy Stovepipe, Papa Charley Jackson, Sylvester Weaver, Emmett Miller, Jimmie Rodgers, The Carter Family. All recorded prior to 1930.
To just listen with never delving into the why and the history.....can't do it. I have to know the influenses, the story behind the sound.
A radio show that ran four song sets, then a littlle history lesson on what ya just heard, then go off in another direction like train songs, rain, prison, wicked women, drugs, alcohol, violence, yep...interesting.
A four song set on ...Rain...featuring Tom Waits, Garth Brooks, Dee Clarke, Johnny Ray, then after a history lesson a four song set .....Trains....featuring Johnny Cash, Bukka White, Roy Acuff, Savoy Brown, then a history lesson, then....................

Getting back to music.
Imagine going out into a field and asking a tractor driver if he would stop work and record a few songs for you. That is what happen to Fred McDowell in 1959. Somehow McDowell who was born in 1904 never was recorded despite his immense talent. So his first recordings are right there on his front porch in Como Mississippi. He would go on to become a huge star on college campuses and even toured Europe, a fantastic guitarist and singer.
This is the kind of thing I look for. The story.

When I was a sprinter I was at 220, I just ran track for football. After my navy days I got real serious about weight training, now at 275 pounds of muscle, my 100m would be.....sad.
