Steal? The first thing I thought of was how many young men and women let drugs steal a portion of their lives and sports careers? I'd rather my son do something positive like being a missionary than some of the things young men do. At least it is a experience he can build on, guys like Lloyd Daniels Todd Maranovich gave away a lot more than two years of their career to drugs.

I don't care what religion you belong to, doing a charitable work is never wrong.

What the does someone who pisses away their lives on drugs have to do with someone who believes some religious fairy tail? What a dumb comparison.

But if I did want to entertain this rather ridiculous line of reasoning, I'd say that both are a waste of time and that's where they end in similarity in the context of the discussion of an athlete's development and their length of career at the pro level. There's a whole lifetime to be lived that can be given to charitable work. You only have so many years to be a productive athlete. Athletes can't afford to just give time away. What if he gets injured and has to take a year off? That's three years gone instead of one.
