i would agree that the core problem is that we have people with evil thoughts and the mental instability which makes them think acting on those thoughts is a rational idea (at least with regards to mass shooting). but i'd rather give that person a nerf gun than an AR-15
that's a very different story than a typical murder where the killer knew the victim, and had a specific motive for the killing. those would be much more difficult to legislate. a father could kill a wife and child with just about any household item that resembles a weapon. but some 19 year old shmuck isn't killing 17 people with a katana
