Anyone notice how the fadeaway jumper went out of style? Nobody does it anymore. In the mid-late 90s, it was all the rage, with guys like MJ and Sprewell, Iverson, etc making it a staple part of their games, even kicking their feet out to draw fouls (until the refs cracked down on that):
Now even more shots are being jacked up, but they're all the same form, think Klay Thompson or Curry or Harden, or KD. Straight up, or through a defender, or a step back.
But never a jumping back in one motion, or even rarer, jumping back in a spin.
What happened to this shot? I guess they all want to draw fouls so they don't jump away from a possible blocked shot.
The only guy I see do this consistently now is LeBron, and Kawhi had the shot last year.

I don't think it's gone. KD uses it all the time. So do midrange guys like Kawhi, CP0, and Derozan. Actually everyone uses it when needed, even Klaynus (who's primarily a spot up guy) when he's posting up. As far as the spin fadeaway that's just an ugly, inefficient shot that's a desperation shot unless you're an egomaniac like Kirby.

How would a Spurs fan believe this? Aldridge takes like 10 fadeaway jump shots per game
Kyrie, Chris Paul, Klay Thompson(in the post), Marc Gasol, Wade, Wiggins, Towns, Kawhi, Aldridge, Randolph and DeRozan all utilize it, off the top of my head..
At times, Hakeem made the fadeaway spin look pretty efficient, especially when facing a certain 7 footer who went to the Naval Academy ...

Great video. But guess what, DeRozan has been criticized the past few years for being a relic, an inefficient scorer ill-fitted for the modern NBA because he's a volume long 2 shooter. And now this year, he acquiesced and is now shooting a ton of 3s.
Totally agree with this, the general point about loss of fundamentals. It is a move that has to be honed and perfected. Only the best scorers back in the day had the move, and it was because they worked on it a ton. Nowadays players only work on jacking up 3s and getting to the line. They don't even know how / where to make post entry passes anymore, you see guys making those passes from the top of the 3 point line. Also look how Murray runs the break. He couldn't even convert a 3 on 2 break a couple games ago. Even the announcers have been chatting about players not boxing out anymore bc everyone runs back to guard the 3 point line. So now if you just run in for an offensive board you have a good chance of getting it

Agree. A properly-executed spin creates space from the defender while maintaining balance and proper shooting form, which can be highly reliable if mastered.
Nowitzki had that shot. One footed, arching away from the defense.
I think some of the reasons it isn't as popular nowadays, are
-Less one on one offense emphasized this era, more passing and ball movement is what is popular.
-It's a post move, and nobody really does back to the basket post moves as much as before.
-You need either strong jumping legs or a strong/quick jumpshot release to make it reliable.
-Small window of opportunity to get the shot off confidently once you're airborne (especially turnaround fadeaway. Reverse pivot fadeaway is a little more forgiving, because your shooting elbow has a longer split second time aligning to the basket, as you are turning. You can release slightly early, or even slightly late and still be aligned.)

His game is antiquated. He clogs the offense with inefficient shots, which don't go in against playoff defenses like they do in the regular season. If this is who you're holding up as the example of great fundamentals, you don't know what fundamentals are.
No need to use the shot in a league where no one is playing defense.
A lot of players mentioned shoot turnarounds, where they are actually leaning, rather than fading.

The fadeaway has left existence because fundamentals have gotten BETTER, not worse. I love fadeaways, but at best it’s a stupid inefficient shot.
It's a 2pt shot. Why take those odds for that low of a payout relative to the spot up 3?
Dirk is one of the few exceptions, he would kill you from there and you couldn't do anything about it. You'd have to be that deadly in order to have a chance against a decent 3pt shooting team.
