LOS ANGELES — On the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich paid tribute to the civil rights icon, calling him “one of the great men of the century.”
“His example is something all of us can follow,” Popovich said.
King’s dream also included an end to economic injustice, Popovich said. In a 1967 speech, King said the United States suffered from “the sickness of racism, excessive materialism and militarism.”
“He was interested in the economic structure of the country that perpetuated continued disadvantage for the black race,” Popovich said before Wednesday night’s game with the Los Angeles Lakers.
“He wasn’t around long enough to see how that would work out, and I think today he would be pretty disappointed to see that it hasn’t worked out very well to date. So that’s sad.
“But he was quite a leader and showed a lot of courage and for ude because I think people pretty much came at him from both sides for his views and what he did, especially when he decided that Vietnam was an immoral enterprise, and he was correct.”

So wait, Pop thinks that MLK would be disappointed in the progress from the 60s to now? Ugh.
This guy loves pandering.
The Spurs are a white supremacist organization. Just look at Pop’s roster moves and coaching hires.
Pop is absolutely right in saying that
I'm sure you can confirm that you have talked to MLK and know exactly what he thinks about the "lack of progress" since his assassination.
doesn't really take much of an effort to see what he was pushing for. Try looking in places other than breitbart
What's breitbart? Oh, you are making assumptions of me without any information. Very woke of you.
woke enough, there's plenty of info to take from how triggered ya'll get when Pop talks politics
If not for the awful Mills, Pau contracts and if the Spurs reached 50, I don't think anyone would give a .
I don't get "triggered" from random bursts of racism charges that come from Pop's mouth. But I guess if I do, you get triggered by anyone that makes any comment about Pop's random and inarticulate rants based on something that he heard someone say at some time to avoid answering questions about the Spurs losses. He loves the media and their fawning until they ask him a question about a Spurs loss, and then he turns arrogant and condescending to them. That's why they always ask him about his politics, as predictable as they are, because they are tired of being talked down to by his arrogance.
good example of how spoiled the fanbase is
it's a good example of how spoiled some of the players are.
Hey, MLK would be disappointed to hear that Patty Mills only got $50 million. He's probably turning over in his grave.
IDK...he's not black black. I think MLK would be OK with it.
MLK would be pissed that Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are still alive.
Pop doing his 30 for 30 achtick, tbh.
America, where a black man can rise to president of the free world, or make $20 million in exchange for playing 9 games of basketball.
They had it so much better in Africa.![]()
I think MLK would be pissed at all of the divisive talk from both sides.
Pop just went full re .
Anyone that thinks this is completely detached from reality.
That's what happens when your coach consistently makes moronic comments.
