Exclusive: U.S. sorghum armada U-turns at sea after China tariffs

Several ships carrying cargoes of sorghum from the United States to China have changed course since Beijing slapped hefty anti-dumping deposits on U.S. imports of the grain, trade sources and a Reuters analysis of export and shipping data showed.

The supply-chain pain felt by sorghum suppliers on the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans underscores how quickly the mounting trade tensions between the U.S. and China can impact the global agricultural sector, which has been reeling from low commodity prices amid a global grains glut.

Twenty ships carrying over 1.2 million tonnes of U.S. sorghum are on the water, according to export inspections data from the USDA’s Federal Grain Inspection Service.

Of the armada, valued at more than $216 million, at least

five changed course within hours of China’s announcing tariffs on U.S. sorghum imports on Tuesday,

Sorghum is a "shot across the bow" crop. Doesn't appear as widely traded.

Little doubt that prices will drop a LOT, and already likely have.

Sorghum was an end around for China to import feed. Everytime they want to to drive prices down they would announce a new regulation or tariff. I can't remember when but China put a huge tariff on DDG'S. Those are the protein rich by product of ethanol. Sorgum was not included in that so that became a very desirable niche product for China. Part of that expired last fall. Sorgum is very similar to corn. Imagine a more drought tolerant, less yielding version of corn.

The tariff China put on DDGs was in the Obama administration era. This was not part of the last few months. This ticky tack bull has been goin on for a long time. General US population just noticing it now though.

Trash's fascistic war the press aided by his tariff war on free trade

Newsprint Tariffs Will Cost Major Chains Tens Of Millions Of Dollars

The Tampa Bay Times laid off 50 people last week.

Management blamed the action on tariffs levied against newsprint imported from Canada to the U.S. That bump in prices will cost Tampa $3 million a year.

Major newspaper chains face expenses that will be much higher, although these expenses are weighed against larger revenue

Several large newspaper chains will face the largest increases in newsprint prices in absolute dollars.

These are Gannett (NYSE: GCI), tronc (NASDAQ: TRNC), hedge fund owned Digital First Media, which just laid off dozens of people in Denver and on the West Coast, Hearst, Advance Media, McClatchy (NYSE: MNI) and Gatehouse Media.

Among them, they own most of the large newspapers in America and hundreds of newspapers in aggregate.

Each of these companies has newsprint demand much larger than that of The Tampa Bay Times.

These companies operate on razor-thin margins, often less than 5% based on net income.

McClatchy, for example, had net income before taxes of $4 million in the fourth quarter on $245 million in revenue.

As steel tariffs squeeze U.S. businesses, uncertainty threatens economic growth

"We're in the dark, just like everybody else," said an executive of a West Coast steel importer.

"This administration has been supposedly pro-business, but business doesn't like uncertainty," groused a distributor of stainless steel, who, like others, requested anonymity to avoid antagonizing officials.

the outlook has turned hazy for many — downright bleak for some.

The tariffs have brought higher prices for many manufacturers and construction firms

and considerable uncertainty for both importers and domestic manufacturers of steel and aluminum.

When Trump issued the tariff orders, he gave temporary exemptions to a handful of the biggest steel and aluminum exporters to the United States, including Canada, Mexico, Brazil and the European Union. But those exemptions are set to expire on Tuesday.

    At the same time, the

Commerce Department is supposed to rule on hundreds of requests for exemptions from U.S. manufacturers

who say that domestic firms can't supply the particular types of metals they need.

    As of the weekend, the

Commerce Department had posted tariff-exclusion requests for about 650 steel importers,

but roughly 5,000 more hadn't been publicly listed on its website,

including some that were submitted more than a month ago.

As meticulously thought through as the original Muslim ban

    What a farce

Trump delays metal tariffs on Canada, EU, Mexico, exempts some others

U.S. President Donald Trump has postponed the imposition of steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada, the European Union and Mexico until June 1, and

has reached agreements for permanent exemptions for Argentina, Australia and Brazil,

The decisions came just hours before temporary exemptions from the tariffs on these countries were set to expire at 12:01 a.m. (0401 GMT) on Tuesday.

“The administration is also extending negotiations with Canada, Mexico, and the European Union for a final 30 days.

In all of these negotiations, the administration is focused on quotas that will restrain imports, prevent transshipment, and protect the national security,”

there would be no further extensions beyond June 1 to stave off tariffs. wanna bet?

Buy the rumor sell the fact.

Soybeans rose, staging a late-session rally that some
traders attributed to optimism about the outcome of U.S. trade
talks with top global soy buyer China.

    Per successful farming market analysis.

Soy's up 1% late in the session.

There is a simple solution for china to immediately start equalizing the trade balance without losing anything. They buy a load of LPG and will be buying billions of mcf in the future as they transition from coal. They could just start buying it from the US.

It is. Requires some expensive tankers, and special docking facilities. Not insurmountable, but keeping it cold enough to be liquid makes it somewhat costly.

Zero Tech Emitted: ZTE halts assembly lines after US govt sanctions cripple mobile maker

China’s going to be super duper happy – not

US sanctions against Chinese mobe maker ZTE have forced the company to go into zombie mode as

it can’t get the electronic components it needs from American suppliers.

Last month, the US Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) imposed
seven years of sanctions on ZTE

after the biz repeatedly lied to investigators about putting US-built hardware in its devices and selling the gear to North Korea and Iran.

The ban stops US firms selling and shipping electronics and other components to ZTE, leaving the manufacturer short of key widgets.

Collateral carnage as ZTE sanctions see Australia’s top telco dump mobe-maker

Telstra bins own-brand phones, seeks alternative supplier

Australia’s largest and dominant telco, Telstra, has stopped selling the ZTE devices it sold under its own brand.

Telstra blamed US sanctions recently imposed on ZTE that prevent the Chinese mobe-maker from acquiring parts made by US companies.

ZTE halted its production lines as a result, saying that it just can’t build anything without US-derived parts.

Telstra’s become collateral damage, saying the US ruling “prevents ZTE from manufacturing devices for our range.”

It’s therefore stopped sales of 22 ZTE-made-but-Telstra-branded handsets and mobile broadband devices.

    Which will hurt:

Telstra’s own-brand kit doesn’t top sales charts, but the fact

the company’s got 22 on the books shows it values this kind of product.

The carrier will likely have plenty of these on the shelves in its warehouses and retail stores and has already started to assure existing users that their phones will keep working.

    https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/0...g_zte_devices/

So Trash makes an example/scapegoat of ZTE, "because he can", most probably on fake charges, and hurts an ally.

ZTE to USA: Sure, ban us, but you cannot afford such victories

We’ve done everything you asked - even implemented SAP - pleads Chinese vendor

ZTE on Friday published a riposte in which it argues it has tried really, really hard to improve its export compliance capability

even to the extent of implementing SAP – and

co-operated with US authorities on an ongoing investigation.

    The company’s statement said:

“It is unacceptable that BIS insists on unfairly imposing the most severe penalty on ZTE

even before the completion of investigation of facts,

ignoring the continuous diligent work of ZTE and

the progress we have made on export compliance."

The company also notes that ZTE has punished employees responsible for past misdeeds and that

    an independent investigation remains incomplete.”

It points out that the ban

“will not only severely impact the survival and development of ZTE, but

will also cause damages to all partners of ZTE including a large number of U.S. companies.”

share price dips in the wake of the ban for US companies Acacia Communications and Qualcomm, as both count(ed) ZTE among their larger clients.

ZTE will have little trouble finding other suppliers, and China has encouraged its own semiconductor industry to smarten up. China already favours local suppliers and the ban could give it reason to accelerate their development to ensure ZTE remains viable.

    https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/0..._us_trade_ban/

So Trash/Mnuchin hitting ZTE will cause a drop in sales of US companies to China.

Trash s stuff up, "because he can", gratuitous, destructive use of Pres powers.

Trash discovers unintended consequences. ZTE has already shut down

Trump pledges to help Chinese phonemaker ZTE ‘get back into business’

President Trump pledged on Sunday to help Chinese telecom giant ZTE return to business, days after the company said it would cease “major operating activities” because of the U.S. government’s recent trade restrictions.

“President Xi of China, and I, are working together to give massive Chinese phone company, ZTE, a way to get back into business, fast,” Trump tweeted. “Too many jobs in China lost. Commerce Department has been instructed to get it done!”

The comment marks a dramatic shift in tone for a president who has long accused China of stealing U.S. jobs — and could presage a reversal of one of the Trump administration’s toughest actions to date against a Chinese company.

Trash is a huge fraud. Add in all the waivers for 100s of US companies to evade Trash's tariffs on alu and steel.
