You'll know Becky is a good coach when they stop talking about her as an important social issue.

Yeah, pre civil rights era is the same as today, Philo.

When Jackie was playing, there were enough blacks who could have replaced most of the white players right then and there, from an ability standpoint.

Are you saying there are women who are more capable to coach men's basketball than the existing male coaches, who can't get a look because of their gender? If so, do you really believe that ?

Sometimes I think you just comment to see yourself type.

no, i'm not saying that. nor did i hint it.

but your claim was we'd only know she's any good if people stopped talking about her as an important social issue. that's an awful argument.

    Bull .

Jackie had to be good to break the barrier. She didn't. She hadn't even coached before. There were a ton of good coaches out of work when she was hired.

When people start talking about her as a coach instead of as the first female coach in the NBA, she'll no longer be the Danica Patrick of the NBA, with all the accolades and zero success.

Pop broke the barrier for her. It's not like she was wowing people with her coaching prowess and someone decided " the nay sayers, we need her talent".

I hope she gets a head coaching job. It would be an interesting experiment to see how it goes.

Not really, unless you think you can pin the ability of every female in the world on the outcome of Becky's coaching performance. It would be no different than making anyone else a coach. If she failed, it's got nothing to do with her gender, just like if she succeeds. Granted, there are some things she's expected to be worse at that she would have to address, and destroy some dogma, but the W/L column shouldn't have anything to do with it.

You are right but that's not how the public will view it. If she fails then people will say that women can't succeed as head coaches. Anyways it will still be interesting to see how she does as woman dealing with the players and conflicts might arise from players wanting more minutes, touches, etc.

Way to miss the point. If Becky got into the league because she was so good that she could cross over the violent, 300 year barrier of racism like Jackie did, she'd be talked about in a different light than she's being talked about now. Right now, in the SJW era, she could be there simply because she's female. Jackie wasn't brought into the majors because he was black. Jackie didn't have to prove he belonged there, that was obvious from the start. Jackie had to play ball through it all, through all the fences and gates that were put in his way. Meanwhile red carpets were rolled out for Becky. She'd have to up pretty bad to screw that up, and even then it wouldn't reflect bad on her gender. Somehow you think those two are the same things.

Do you think Jackie got more opportunities because of his race? Or do you think he got fewer? How about Becky and her gender? Do you think there were other non-coaches out there who could have done as well or better than Becky? Of course, but Pop wouldn't have the moral high ground in which to pontificate his virtues to the world.

    Stop being dense.

Lmao, whether you think Becky is a civil rights hero on par with MLK and whether you think she will be a good coach are not really related. You can ignore one or both angles.

This gasol article isn't really persuasive on it's merits except to raise the bar of the debate. Maybe it's all symbolism, the charity interview, the white knight comments, but the ball has been rolling.

Don't expect her to get a job while bud and Casey are available, but she's closer now.

She may have gotten a break when pop picked her, but that's how all coaches start. she put time to help the team as an informal coach intern before getting hired. She has been competent since. No nba coach is going to be a star like Jackie Rob so it's stupid to make this the talent bar. Borrego got a job because he had the better experience.
