basically this. now its foolish to think everybody is gonna be like brooks and red from shawshank and be completely rehabilitated... but the real question is the purpose of prisons.

    are they meant to...

    a) keep the general population safe from dangerous individuals
    b) rehabilitate those inside so that they can emerge from their sentence as no longer being a serious danger, while also having a reasonable path to joining society
    c) meant to be a deterrent for future criminals
    d) meant to punish someone

there's obviously a combination of these... but the focus should be much less on D, imo, and to a degree, C.

    How about the main purpose:

    e) make it seem like politicians are doing something about a problem

DEATH PENALTY with firing squad would stop it
I don't think so. This shooter wanted to kill himself but didn't go through with it.

BigCorp actually exploits prisoners, pays like $0.25/hour, and for-profit prisons takes their cut as "employment agency".

A prisoner costs like $30K/year, with most states, esp the big ones, spending $Bs more on per-prisoner than on per-student.

then put them in so much debt that when they get out, they have to commit more crimes to pay off the balance

sure...let's just start putting students in prisons? I don't know...I don't think you've thought it through.

you get up and you work because you have self worth then you buy food unless you steal
you pay for your own bills unless you think the gov should pay your student loans off
you live in the country where you are a legal citizen unless you want to hide in the shadows in usa
and liberals think you have more rights then usa citizens
