Ninety-three percent of all foreign nationals that are in federal prison are in the U.S. illegally, according to the first quarterly report of fiscal 2018 by the DOJ and the Department of Homeland Security.
One out of every five people in the Bureau of Prisons' custody are either known or suspected to be immigrants, according to the report released Thursday.
"The illegal immigrant crime rate in this country should be zero. Every crime committed by an illegal alien is, by definition, a crime that should have been prevented," Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement.
"It is outrageous that tens of thousands of Americans are dying every year because of the drugs and violence brought over our borders illegally and that taxpayers have been forced, year after year, to pay millions of dollars to incarcerate tens of thousands of illegal aliens."
The Bureau of Prisons or the U.S. Marshals Service have 42,284 confirmed foreign nationals in custody, with 39,413 of them being confirmed as illegal aliens, the report read. And 15,536 suspected immigrants in the system remain under investigation.
