Pure fan faction. He's a dude with a mask that had probably 10 minutes worth of screen time and almost no dialogue spread across two movies. And then had a ridiculous death. He isn't a character that needed the backstory he was given in the prequels or his own movie. I guarantee if his costume had been different, or we could at least see his face, nobody would give two s about him.
