One of the things that stuck out at me during the election was one of the Libetarian (Austin Petersen?) talking points on immigration. He wanted to speed up the immigration process, a modern day fastpass for Ellis Island. This was before the idiots, rep and dem, made it an issue.

Don't remove illegals, make the legals faster.

What’s changed in 15 years? The alleged problem would be easy to solve from the demand end if anybody really wanted to do so.
Republicans keep the borders wide open so business can reap in the cheap, rights-free labor, but then play border cruelty theater to appease poor whites.
The supposedly “open borders” Democrats cracked down the last time they were in control.

The OP-quoted article arguing for wage increases across the board would have been considered left-wing three years ago. It’s like a kind of socialism that is nationalist at the same tine.

obvious, yet needs to be continually pointed out.

it's a weird blind spot on both sides of the ideological spectrum.

The US survived a much larger influx from 1980-2000.

Why is the largest US law enforcement corps ever tasked with beating a problem that is significantly smaller?
And during that time, there was a constant outcry to repair the porous border situation. Just because you survived a cancer doesn't mean you're ok with getting a cancer.

well, I don't consider Central American migration to Texas to be cancer.

    your mileage may vary, obviously.

Why care about illegal immigrants? For one thing, they’ve become vital to key sectors of the US economy

undo ented immigrant workers play vital roles in the U.S. economy, erecting American buildings, picking American apples and grapes, and taking care of American babies. Oh, and paying American taxes.

So if our shared humanity isn’t enough to care, let’s examine the other reasons.

Pew Research Center estimates that about

11.3 million people are currently living in the U.S. without authorization, down from a peak of 12.2 million in 2007.

More than half come from Mexico, and

about 15 percent come from other parts Latin America.

About 8 million of them have jobs, making up 5 percent of the U.S. workforce,

figures that have remained more or less steady for the past decade.

    are unsurprisingly

most concentrated in border states like California and Texas,

where they make up about 9 percent of both states’ workforces,

while in Nevada, their share is over 10 percent.

    Where they work

The map shows the share of unauthorized workers in each state's workforce.

    < map >

estimates that about half of the nation’s farmworkers are unauthorized,

while 15 percent of those in construction lack papers –

more than the share of legal immigrants in either industry.

In the service sector, which would include jobs such as fast food and domestic help, the figure is about 9 percent.

    What unauthorized workers do

Undo ented immigrants make up more more than half of the hired labor on farms, according to the USDA, while Pew data show their share in construction is about 15 percent. Overall, they make up 5 percent of the U.S. workforce.

    Hired farmers
    53%
    Construction
    15%
    Production
    9%
    Services
    9%
    Transportation
    6%
    Overall workforce 5%

I remember when some local lakes had open gates 24 hours a day. Now you have to pay to enter and they close at dark. It seems people misused the lake and parks especially when no one was looking. There was an honor box up front that nighttime people would be requested to drop money into to cover the costs of cleaning the park in the morning. The boxes were damaged and stolen, and when they weren't there was rarely any money in them yet the lake shores were littered with beer cans and food bags along with whatever trash people didn't want in their vehicles, and fish remains from not using the cleaning station, using the shoreline instead and discarding the fish on the bank which attracted raccoons which further damaged the park resources.

When it gets to be too much, partly because degradation of "give a " and the increase in numbers create anonymity which seems to empower assholes to be themselves, rules change. Those changes not only affect the assholes, but the decent, law abiding people as well.

Same is true for the borders. There are well intended people trying to survive who get lumped in with the mass influx of coyote crops. They all get scooped up in one fell swoop and that's when individuals get separated from others. It's not desirable just as closing the gates to public lakes isn't desirable, but if you don't want a 3rd world existence you have to do something to avoid it.
I have seen the same thing. Public kayak launch points. Lazy ass people abuse them and trash them. Damage stuff just for fun. Rip stuff out of cars while peeps out on the water.

There is a solution. Public parks controlled by government OR private citizens voluntarily giving up time. I have seen both work very well. What is very clear is that the Kennedy appeal ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your public kayak launch points, does not work well with people who do not value public lands. So, shout out to Yellowstone and all the backwoods trails and remote camp sites that I get to experience. Canada your next. Victoria, San Juan Islands, Salish Sea...

So now back to the border...
