No, I was referencing Trevor Ariza for Matt Bonner back when Ariza was playing for the Wizards. Remember det proposal? One of those all time classics.
It was him and Blair back when the Wizards asked about DeJuan. Ariza had been salary-dumped the year before and then got salary-dumped the next year, so it seemed like a good trade with Matt's deal being non-guaranteed. The only thing that looks bad in retrospect is that SA didn't need a small-forward like I thought they did. It was a great idea for SA and more than WSH ended up getting when they did deal him.

So they legit didn't like Costello? Thought he should have been a full roster guy myself.
hmmm maybe Joff is not going to play in Europe after all... I haven't seen him decline that option yet.

I also wonder if he will get a training camp invite and compete for a roster spot with someone new, like possibly Metu...

Probably seeing what bargain bigs are out there. The center market is gonna be brutal once Dallas makes their choice.

Remember that PO have to be exercised. The default is that they expire. Players don't actually opt out. They just announce that they won't opt in

The San Antonio Spurs have tendered qualifying offers to the following players, making all them of restricted free agents: Kyle Anderson, Davis Bertans, Bryan Forbes and two-way player Darrun Hilliard. The Spurs can now match any offer sheets they sign.
    Forbes?

Great, now Pop will gift him minutes over both White and Lonnie

Hoping it's more like a Gary Neal thing where they have zero intention to keep him but just want to see if they can get some value for him. I really don't anticipate the team re-upping him unless one of Tony or Manu retire. Even then, they might decide to go with Hanlan if they need cheap depth.

I'm more worried about him signing the QO

Spurs probably trying to get in line with that MLE. Can't and shouldn't offer more.
Would rather Spurs go hard after Rudy by offering a 4 year deal at that price since we have no more cap room. That or trade Green and Gasol to free up some cap space.

I also think that's a possibility, though I'd hope the agent waits a bit to look for a longer deal or better opportunity.

Seems to me that Pop really likes HIlliard.
I also think the team needs shooters so aggressively that Forbes getting picked up isn't an accident. If any of the designated "shooters" get hurt, they need someone, Forbes can at least shoot. I just don't know what the Spurs are going to do with so many guards though. I speculate that Manu is retiring, but we don't know for sure. I can't imagine Tony feels secure in getting picked up again and thus he's made statements that he's open to change teams. Think Forbes as deep bench (non rotation guy) on a min deal is fine.

Brandon Paul tho... maybe he will get replaced with Hilliard... didn't the Spurs have to pick up his deal too?

Yeah, that's the only real difference between POs and ETOs now. POs by default opt into the extra year going away. ETOs default into the contract continuing.

Paul is non-guaranteed until August 1. So SA probably won't do anything with him right away. I'd also hope they wouldn't keep Forbes for that role. If they need shooters, they need to go out and get good ones. Bryn has been a negative on the floor to the point where he has to be liquid-metal hot for him to make an impact. He just hasn't been that guy in the NBA.

I assume he needs to make the team again or something.

I haven't really speculated on the roster composition but just assume that if they pick up Hilliard they won't pick up B.Paul but they might just let these two duke it out in training camp. (Speculation).

Utah Summer League could be a showcase for skills of #Spurs rookies Walker, Metu: “I think myself and Lonnie were two of the best athletes in the draft this year,” Metu told me Sunday. “I think that will help us transition a lot easier and be able to contribute right away.”

RC called Jack McClinton the best shooter in the draft (same draft as Steph Curry).

Pop and RC love their undersized scrub shooters.
