Like rasuo214 says, since 2017 season we heard rumors that the Spurs could have trouble signing a supermax contract.

If those rumors were true, I have no doubt that leaving was one of the options, at the same time it's pretty obvious that those comments didn't help to fix the relationship.

Before last season started there were rumors that Kawhi wasn't happy with the Spurs off-season moves + the reports of not wanting to offer the supermax (I remember seeing it even before the season started) and finally the issues with his injury and the reluctance to allow him to get a personal 2nd opinion. Fast forward to now and the reports have been that Kawhi still respects Pop but has issues with the FO. Pop is only going to be around a few more seasons so he can't promise to be around another 6 years.

I doubt this is the 1st time that PATFO have meetings with Spurs owners about the supermax...I guess they started this talk last year. And that’s why whe heard those rumors about the issues with that.

I just remember a Woj’s article saying that will be hard for Pop to sell owners a supermax contract... That meant Spurs owners were very reluctant to give it even if Kawhi was healthy.

If we consider that Pop will be coaching just 1 or 2 years of 5 years of the contract, it makes sense that owners weren’t willing to sign that supermax deal

Let say hypothetically it's true the Spurs were never going to offer Kawhi the supermax and they let him and his camp know that last summer. It still does not excuse Kawhi from sitting out the whole entire year with a fake injury. When you sign a contract you are suppose to play out the whole entire contract. If he wants to leave after the contract is over that's fine. I would have had no qualms about it and would have called out the Spurs FO for being cheap.

Nah, he won 4 rings. And he's a team player and loyal. Isn't interested in self promotion, even if through family members. IOW, he's a good ing teammate.

He came back, played 9 games and still looked injured, he had issues with his quad in previous seasons.

I truly believe he was injured most season, he could be 80% in April but it's a player's right not to play until he's 100%, there is no need to aggravate an injury

The guy who’s RUPTURED HIS QUAD tendon and played within 6 months called out a guy who’s quad is sore with calcium build up or whatever you wanna call it lol...still hasn’t played and not only that LEFT the team and was not keeping his teammates in the loop. They’re busting their ass trying to stay alive and all they wanted to know was if he was coming back...Kawhi missed his own deadline to return and they wanted to know what’s up...,the worst part. He couldn’t or wouldn’t give them an answer and left he team again...

You’re a Top 5 player in the league...If KD, LeBron or anybody else pulled this stunt they’d be getting obliterated...only reason why Kawhi didn’t is because they knew before all this he had Lakers in his sight..

That’s the most ed up part...he wanted out before all of this and then used his injury and frustration against PATFO to make them not the understanding ones..while paying him max salary meanwhile taking away all their control. Spurs tried to play ball but it didn’t work because it was NEVER gonna work.

It would’ve been hard for Kawhi and their camp to play their card if he played and Spurs won 60 games again..they couldn’t take that risk..so miss the season stay healthy and watch the team go down In flames
