Nah, it's smart. You know that 99% of the time the keeper will choose a post, so it makes sense to aim for the middle. The thing is, you need to elevate the ball or the keeper can block it with his legs.
Glad Croatia are through despite a poor performance; they are better team than Denmark (much higher ceiling) who would likely bend over against Russia instead...

I mean, you're kind of right but I hate the chance that it can end so badly even when it's elevated. I feel like it's always the same type of players that attempt it too. I remember El Loco Abreu always used to flick it to the middle (even did it in a WC) all the time until GKs started expecting it and his subsequent embarrassing misses put an end to it real quick.
