Yeah I watch too many movies. I have a friend that lives in Moscow works for various international press agencies. and I met him through my Uncle who was a US diplomat. So sure too many movies. My Uncle and friend are fluent in Russian.

And I had the displeasure of staying in Moscow back from Sierra Leone where I got to witness what was thought to be Chechnyian slammed up against a wall in those stinky smoke filled airports while traveling with my Uncle. He was a bit dark and in the wrong place.

sons if you really got ties to diplomats you should know these things about Russia:
1) democracy doesn't and can't work in a country that just in the last 100 years had ww1, civil war, war with poland, lenin, stalin, ww2, holmodor, corrupt commies and the cold war, piss-on-himself yeltsin + shock and awe market liberalisation. It just can't because there is no stability to create the wealth to educate people on how to use/protect a democratic process. 3) putin is an absolute master geopolitics player, that influenced usa elections, german/italy/uk/france policy through far right funding, created silk road with china, took back crimea, abkazia, ossetia, crushed chechens, revitalized key industries and the army, stabilized economy to something manageable right now, survives a usa+saudi crunch on oil, won them the world cup, engineered the alternative the IMF with china, and so on. He's an evil man but he's among the GOAT statesmen and quite possibly the best in the last 50 years. He is THAT everybody hates but fears and everybody knows it.

That's why both russians and westerners with access to Russia don't care, because life is ty and this is the best Russia can do right now.
