I frankly have no idea whether this kid will be any good or not. So far, I have not been impressed, but Tony was not impressive when he first started either.

He hasn't even been the best Spur tbh. That'd be Derrick White. But he's definitely shown flashes of his upside.

Man, the Spurs draft picks get so much more love than all other teams for so many years now. How many of these guys have ended up being anything approaching star level since Manu/Tony? How many have been lauded as draft day steals/stars? Blair, Beno, Splitter, Murray etc. All end up flaming out as non stars.

Most have decent NBA careers, which is way more than most picked at their draft positions.

Drafting in the late 20s, if you get a good rotation player or a starter, you’ve done your job. Go back through the last 15 drafts, and look at all of the players selected before the Spurs pick in that draft that either didn’t get another contract, or didn’t even complete their rookie contract at all. To expect stars is just sheer stupidity.

It's weird how spurfan can simultaneously overrate and underrate draft picks.

Let's take another angle at the same argument (NBA execs/media overrating Spurs draft picks).

A bunch of the Spurs' lauded picks of recent memory have had decently long careers as role players for the Spurs (Beno, Blair, Bonner, Neal, Splitter, etc). And then these players have turned their success/visibility with the Spurs into second or third deals with other teams, but they have never turned into stars. And usually they ended up out of the league by the end of their 2nd deals.

Did they improve and have longevity due to the Spurs' real strength, Pop and the coaching staff/culture (which the Big 3 helped to create and prolong until now), or did the Spurs draft awesome talent? I think the Spurs drafted very average players with decent characters for the most part, and then coached the out of them.

But what most people on ST complain about is the Spurs' seeming unwillingness to take those high risk / high reward bets, like drafting taller/more athletic, possibly disadvantaged American kids with better ceilings, for lower ceiling / high character guys. Case in point, passing up on guys like MKG, the A&M guy from this year, etc. Guys who everyone wanted on draft night because of their potential.

Why not swing for the fences? If not, with our awesome coaching staff to develop players the best we get is what we have. A team full of role players, some being paid star money.

That is the expectation people have created as if every late 1st round pick the Spurs choose will be the "next" Manu or Tony.

The Spurs are smart by drafting three straight guards with varying skills, athletic ability and upside. Hopefully at least two, if not all three, pan out in the long run.

He'll get a few games with the mothership this coming season. I saw an improvement in his decision making over his stint in SL already. Could be really impressive in time.

Right now he plays exactly like JR Smith all the way down to the shot selection. Lets hope Pop can get him to be more like Jimmy Butler. His IQ and spacial awareness is lacking. He will be deadly once he learns to choose his spots within the flow of the offense.
You’d think an “intellectual type” would have better decision making than he does, no?
