The interview seemed like a teenager pouting. I’m still excited to see him in a Spurs uniform.
No. It sounds like a guy who is honest and not closed off.

I literally laughed out loud when I read the part about "I'm low maintenance". WTF? Talk about a blind spot.

People just have different personalities and dispositions, but I would not describe DD as "low maintenance". That being said, I think he'll be fine here. Pop is not someone who treats everyone the same. He never has been. He knows who he can light up (DVerde, TP) and who he can't (LMA).

Look, he has actually had a pretty good regular season no doubt about it. It actually felt like he was turning a corner and things were looking good last season with the Raptors. And then as the Raptors hit a skid late in the season DeRozan fell apart. Anytime you put him anywhere close to a clutch/tight situation he can't handle it at all. He's just another Carmelo Anthony and the Raptors would've honestly improved just by trading him for a bag of chips. He doesn't make anyone else on the team better, only plays for himself, is obsessed with mid range jumpers despite shooting poorly from there, and is an atrocious 3 point shooter. He's also an AWFUL AWFUL defender. People will say "oh, but Pop will make him play defense" No, he won't. This team is going to get decimated on the wings, and it'll only put more pressure on LMA and Poeltl (who I actually like, and am far more excited about than DeRozan) to protect the paint where the Spurs have been a red carpet to the rim.

Where DeRozan does well is get to the free throw line, attack the rim, and create his own shot as he has some tremendous footwork.

However, as I mentioned earlier, when the pressure is on, DeRozan is beyond atrocious. The Raptors got cucked by LeBron, but they looked fifteen times better with DeRozan on the bench. , the Raps were paying nearly 30 million dollars a season to a guy who was unplayable in fourth quarters of their biggest games of the year.

And people say "Oh, he bled for the Raptors, he loved Toronto"...Sure, he liked the city, wanted to be the face of the team but he sulked like an absolute when he got benched in the playoffs and the Raps were making a run. If fans were frustrated with Tony Parker in recent years, DeRozan will be just as bad. He's obviously a better player than TP in recent years but DeRozan is in no shape or form a "sacrifice for the team" type of guy. Him and LMA is going to be an absolute cluster . DeRozan goes rogue a lot of the time, and is comfortably one of the worst clutch performers in the entire league. I'm not even including last year's series vs the Cavs which had some historic lows, just look at this:

So please, spare me the "cliff jumpers are never happy" shtick. I've been watching literally nearly every single Raptor game for years, I go to about 10 games a season in person and if you said you can take 5 of the top 6 players on the Raptors, without hesitation I would leave DeRozan out. He's a cancer, and tries to play hero ball despite having zero ability to carry a team over the hump. It's about as frustrating as the Spurs signing Carmelo from a few years ago when he was better.

Obviously, at the end of the day I hope DeRozan surprises us, maybe he takes that next step, actually has a good playoff series against a good team and can hold his head up high. God knows the team could use his scoring. I also understand the Spurs want to remain compe ive, hence why they turned down good draft picks from the Celtics (big mistake) for short term goals. But this team was awful in the final quarter of last season and even though DeMar's resume says second all team NBA, he's the ultimate empty stats player. I've seen this movie way too many times, and now it is going to be filmed with my favorite actors. I hope to God DeRozan makes me eat crow, but whatever he does in November-January doesn't matter, he loves showing up in the regular season. Just don't be surprised if the corpse of Rudy Gay outplays him come playoff time because DeMar has no clue how to read the game or trust his teammates in high pressure situations.

It honestly will be, but in fairness to Pop he's earned the right to sink this ship. If his goal is to be humiliated by GS in the playoffs before he bows out then so be it.
This is how to convince people the Spurs lost the trade. Loath as I am to say it, the Spurs lost the trade judging by talent alone. Prior to this offseason DeRozan to me has been what they call an empty calories scorer, a volume scorer who barely moves the needle. Lots of his fans call him a Kobe Lite/Costco Kobe, and that kind of game belongs in the 90s. RJ averaged a shade under 20 before he was traded to the Spurs if I remember correctly, and he was such a bad fit his career went downhill from there. DeRozan’s three-point shooting clip and true shooting percentages in the playoffs leave much to be desired. If the goal was to tell people the front office ed it up, guys like Pinoy Marauder and, to a lesser extent, Ka storm should take notes, but it’s fine if they’d wanna keep being asswipes about it.

SA lost a lot of talent, but this aspect of the trade doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Kawhi and his group wanted out and royally ed up his trade value. Leonard painted them into a corner and the front office ultimately had to pull the trigger on a deal they thought was best for them. It’s a passable, not definitely not a stellar return. It’s not bad if you consider the guy was on the last year of his deal while dealing with a degenerative and chronic injury, not to mention a horrible uncle who keeps contacting media outlets to get their message out instead of just talking like normal people.

Regardless, the Spurs still got a humbled player with less baggage and a chip on his shoulder, along with a Euro big and a draft pick. It’s a mediocre return. Much of the fanbase’s optimism comes from the fact DeRozan has never had a coach like Pop before and that he’s relatively young, offering hope that he can play better defence than he currently does. The Spurs managed to make Gay somehow better so there’s a precedent, even if it’s a weak one. Most of it is just speculative, and it’s foolish to think DeRozan wouldn’t have to deal with awkward adjustments. I’ve seen posts about Pöltl being overvalued. Nothing wrong with being fanboys but expectations haven to be tempered to maintain a healthy perspective.

As an aside, I’m curious as to how Leonard thrives outside the Spurs system. Former Spurs usually play better after leaving the team. Leonard is a 2x DPOY and a former FMVP who can thrive in any lineup. Would be fun to see how much of his success was due to the system or how much the system held him back.

I would say the Blake Griffen stuff is far worse than what happened to DeMar. Clippers begged him to stay and raised his jersey to the rafters. Next year he is traded for cap flexibility.

We have a better coach. We'll move the ball better, and have a better system. Hopefully Demar can stick with it, I feel he'll do good under Pop. Hopefully he doesn't suc b to the pressure within the system.

Players have different strengths along with different teammates. DeMar has elite offense and ability to get to the foul line. 5+ assists per game last year is pretty impressive as well. It is up to everybody to make things work. I believe he will become a better player than before - even if his offensive stats take a slight dip.

I followed that whole season. I actually was happy with the way that team competed. They played hard on defense and were in a lot of games. Didn't have the firepower to win many, though.

Dude is pretty bitter about Toronto just up and trading him like that. He hasn't really warmed up to the Spurs yet, maybe a little. Have to give it time.

I can understand his frustrations, Kawhi and Uncle Dennis were crybaby's and DeMar is a Spur because of Kawhi's need for getting out of SA. The NBA is a business and Toronto showed no loyalty to up and trade a player that has played several seasons for them like DeMar has. I can't blame Toronto, if it works out they got the better player in the trade for sure.

Dude get's paid 10s of millions of dollars and understands - at some level - that he's a fungible unit/tradeable with any other player(s) so long as the CBA is satisfied. ing and moaning about Tdot is out of touch and 100% made.

    This.

Now if he's still being emo at the start of training camp, sound the alarm. For now he basically woke up to a divorce letter from his wife, who he thought he would be with forever. Stuff like this shakes people. Let's just hope he ends up stronger for it.

While Delmar's style of play is not a winning formula in today's NBA..Much of the Raptors lack of success has also got to do with the lack of a scoring option among bigs. ...Making them a jump shooting team.. In Aldridge, Derozan has got his first really good big man in a combo since early-Chris Bosh . That should count for a better role for Derozan.

Basketball organizations do not owe their players beyond what's spelled out in each player's contract. This is not a divorce.

Sorry if this has already been posted but I think this merits its own thread. This interview makes clear what kind of person DeMar is. Regardless of whether Kawhi destroys him with natural talent, efficency and his one ring etc. (and I don't think they are really that far apart in value after autist's injury), there is no doubt we now have a MUCH better man in San Antonio in DeMar than Kawhi. I love how this guy handles himself. Super honest and articulate but at the same time, does not trash the Raptors as we would have expected of a typical NBA diva getting traded. Says great things about pop, too and is obviously going to be on board with the system going forward. A true professional.

I have a thread from around 2010 where I proposed we trade for him

Sure he choked many years after that but lets not forget he played for the Choketors next to that choker Lowly. And come on its canada

Im sure spurs were monitoring him all these years as well

Basically its not like Spurs settled on this guy. He was in our radar for many years

Its highway robbery what we achieved given that Mute Cancer was ready to sit out another year
