No, he's not much like Boban at all.
Hope he turns out better and used much more
No, he's not much like Boban at all.
He isn't much like Boban. Believe me. Aside from being a white Euro, at least.
Boban is a giant of a man, bigger than life.Jakob is a paltry 7 feet tall.

Op should get banned for this thread.... No one is the next boban
Not like a boban, but I don't discard human cigar thing.
There is only one Boban the Barbarian!
A more aggressive Tiago
Great comparison. Hopefully he can finish inside a bit more consistently. I always thought Splitter was kinda soft on the inside.
Kinda soft? He was a walking vagina...
Dude was just a 9th pick two years ago, and has spent his time with a team that already has a crowded front-line (JV and Ibaka).
He was still able to be a key piece to one of the most productive bench units in the NBA last season.
He is moving into a great place developmentally, and considering the only other people competing for his minutes are Pau and Bertans, he should get ample opportunity.
Agree fully. He looks great, and given the chance, should, like most big men, finally be coming into top big man form, while still learning. Mobile, rebounds, drives, plays with his head up and confidence up. It's on Pop to make it happen
Exactly. Plus Tim will work with him, too. Good potential there.
I hope Gasol takes him under his wings. If we get a prime Gasol off Jacob, this would be a great trade, better than OG and Siakam tbh.
He is definitely not nor will be a prime Gasol. He seems like a pic n roll dump off specialist. Great hands and quick release inside. None of this matters unless he can start playing D without fouling though. If he can he can be a very good defender.
Then if he gains a mid range it will probably complete his skill set. He doesn't appear to have a ton of potential in the post with his back to the basket.
I'm psyched to see how Poetl develops. He seems to know how to set a pick. Duncan and Tiago were the last bigs we had that consistently set strong picks. That is an invaluable tool to have. There are very few players that actually can set a proper screen in today's game.
Poetl is an under the radar pickup for the Spurs. Lot of upside, especially if a motion offense and P&R are big parts of the game next season.
Nothing like the great Boban. A cross between Tiago and Jeff Foster.
Like I said when the Raptors rumors began in earnest (and I predicted he'd be part of the package, when seemingly no one was focusing on him), he's a younger, healthier, bigger, tougher version of Splitter.
At prime Gasol. If there was even the faintest possibility of this, he wouldn't have been included in the trade.
He's not competing with Bertans for minutes, because they're drastically different players and the latter can't play C. I wouldn't even say he's necessarily competing with Gasol for minutes, so much as he's competing with the reality of the '18 NBA, where playing 3 traditional bigs isn't practical.
If tougher you mean more physical, it doesn't appear to be the case. Poelt'l doesn't appear to be a physical big at all but does most of his damage on quick dives, quick putbacks, and diving blocks. Splitter was a great traditional center, wide shoulders and hips, he was just too injury prone.
Good call on this guy though. I knew nothing about him but from what I'm seeing we basically got our lottery pick with 2 years of grooming under the bag. 1st round draft pick is the cherry on top.
Splitter was pretty much a P&R dum off specialist, and he ended up being a key piece to a championship. Poor guy was just made out of glass.
If the Spurs could even turn Jakob into another Splitter, I would consider that a win.
You can definitely add that to one of Splitters skills but he loved contact (too bad he was not quite strong enough to be more effective) but he was arguably more effective at getting the early pass on the pic n roll for another pass to the 3 ball. (smart bball iq indeed). On defense he was a great well rounded defender too. Poelt'l on the other hand seems limited there unless he gets better footwork and bulkier. (Right now he is just a diving rim protector).
They say he had small hands so he couldn't dunk much...
If Gasol is off the floor, Aldridge pretty much becomes our center for all intents and purposes.
At that point, Pop is going to decide whether he wants another rim defender and rebounder, or shooting. There are simply certain teams where playing 2 bigs isn't going to work, and Aldridge will be eating a large chunk of playing time.
I bet dollar to donuts he is going to try Bertans in some of those instances. The guy leaned on Matt flicking Bonner as a center for half a decade. He has no problem pretending like Bertans is a 4, and if that continues, he will be competing for front court minutes.
He's definitely more physical or at least consistently so.
Even in the most optimistic view: top 30 player, lottery pick who's retained value of selection, likely 1st (which could be combined with own 1st to possibly move into late lottery), the trade was a fail. I don't care so much about the pick being top 20 protected, because a lot would have to happen for the Raptors to not have a top 10 record and I understand they tried but couldn't pry Anunoby loose. Not pawning off Mills instead of Green, was inexplicable though.
Aldridge is a C in this era and he's often been deployed as such as a Spur. He played 54% of his minutes at C 3 seasons ago and 62% last season.
He's a very good rim protector. He doesn't need a rim running C clogging his space, he needs a stretch PF so that he has room to work. Duncan-Splitter flourished at times, but that was a different era and they were both excellent passers.
Bonner never played C; Duncan did.

How can you consider the trade a fail considering all the Spurs had going against them?
Aldridge is more of a C but he can play PF in a lot of line ups. Gasol and Aldridge are just a terrible combination. Poelt'l and Aldridge are not a bad combination at all.
Hope not. Boban sucks. People just loved him Bc he was huge, silly, and ugly af.
Gf is hot tho.
