Sauces: hearing some rumors that the team is being shopped. Nothing imminent, nothing about the team relocating or anything like that, but quietly being shopped.

Wow that sucks. One of the oldest teams in NBA with a rich history. Feels like after the divorce, a lot went downhill.

They should use Century 21 to sell the building. Nice homage to Timmy.

The initial lease on the building runs through 2027, and is airtight, no relocation allowed. The Spurs are not even allowed to play more than two home games outside of Bexar County. That lease was also extended for the $100M or so in renovations, for either five or ten years. Anyway, at a minimum, they're locked in until 2032 or maybe even 2037. If you think that isn't a thing, I suggest you research the Tampa Rays MLB franchise. They've been trying to get out of their lease for years, and can't.

The Rays had a lease buyout plan approved in 2015 for $33 million

The St. Petersburg City Council laid out a path for the Tampa Bay Rays to leave Tropicana Field in 2020 for upwards of $33 million, but it’s not clear whether team owners will take the proposal seriously.

In a 5-to-3 vote, a Rays lease buyout plan from Council member Jim Kennedy was approved. The plan would set up a structure for how much the Rays would pay under different scenarios, including up to $4 million for each year remaining in the Tropicana Field lease and different development fees (nothing for a new St. Pete ballpark, $2.5 million for a new ballpark elsewhere in Pinellas County and $5 million for a Hillsborough County ballpark) depending on the ballpark location. In addition, the team would pay toward demolition of Tropicana Field lease.

Given NBA franchise valuations, it's easy to see double or triple this amount being offered to Bexar County. Of course, the County would have to agree to a buyout - which probably would be a tall order - but it's also not hard to see a group of investors from Seattle or Austin making a play for the Spurs.

It's not the city that buys the Spurs but private investors.

Yeah, the Tampa Bay Rays are moving to....

    ....Tampa Bay.

The thing about the Trop is it's a dump. ATT is nice enough and the lease is great for whoever owns the team. I wouldn't expect any serious talk of a move until the lease is up.

Wouldn't now be the time to sell high? I mean, if the Spurs aren't going to be legit contenders like they have been for so long, wouldn't the value of the franchise start decreasing? I'm assuming if you want to cash out, now might be the best time to do it.

Wasn't commenting other than to show that the Rays had negotiated a framework for a lease buyout at a price tag that wouldn't be prohibitive for a potential buyer.

I wasn't exactly suggesting that the Spurs leave SA. But I think that a move north makes a lot of sense given how the city has grown over the past decade or so. And I think there's a logic to locating them in San Marcos - similar to what the Pistons have in Auburn Hills.

    Had.

    They're back downtown.

Austin has a couple of sites that could work for a new arena if they aren't developed in the meantime, but the city is never going to give the kind of deal the Spurs currently have with Bexar County. Austin is currently bending over the guy who's trying to move an MLS team here.

Fair enough. I also don't see Hays County coughing up a sweet bonus package either.

Again, nothing in what I heard mentioned the team moving. Just that there may be new owners. Not saying that the team can’t/won’t be moved but I don’t think that is a legit concern at the moment.
