I see he’s paying homage to fiesta
Boy knows how to score. Maybe the most potent offensive player we've had since prime Tony. Kawhi was a gifted scorer and highly efficient, but it wasn't really his calling card...he just started hitting the 30 point mark regularly in '16-'17.
We saw how loyal he was to the Raptors. If he buys in to the Spurs at that level he will easily be a fan favorite.
Hopefully he continues to get better as a playmaker.
i've always been a big demar hater but i'm coming around, i know pop will fix him.
I was listening to a few podcasts and a common topic was Demar's loyalty and how he felt betrayed by Ujiri. They were saying that Demar had the option to leave home to LA before, but stayed loyal, and after the "betrayal" by Ujiri, he will have lost trust in organizations altogether and will never fully buy in and might even leave to LA or some other team after 2 years.
Everyone will speculate. Ultimately a player that was never loyal wiuodve never done what DeRozan did. We at least know he has a loyal personality. It's up to the Spurs to show him why they are a worthy franchise for him.
It's not clear the Spurs even want to be on the hook for DeRozan's next contract anyway. It's real easy to be loyal when you're getting in bent maxes. I don't think SA will fight to keep him if he doesn't take a discount. Honestly, DeMar has a long way to go to even justify what he's making now.
IDK he says he was willing to take pay cuts for Toronto and that winning will be his main focus from now on. You can also argue that Derozan will not be in his prime for his next contract (most experts already say he will take the last year option at $27 M because he likely won't get as big of a pay day). He's sort of damaged goods at this point too because of his lack of playoff success in Toronto. I think he wants to show everyone he can be a key cog on a real championship team. He just seems like a good person and will appreciate the Spurs culture. Crossing fingers he and the rest of the Spurs hit the ground running!
I think itīs too early to say if he will take that option for now. Considering he will have to years here and might improve both his defense and 3pt shooting, that alone would make him a lot more valuable, and both things are teachable. Look at Aldridge.
What is to be said is that at that point Mills will be an expiring contract, Gasol will be off the books, and LA will be guaranteed for "only" 7 millions, so the Spurs cap situation, even considering the ty Mills contract, seems very well for that year.
Had DeRozan fit well with us, the team and himself will be able to look at many options, a longer deal with a discount, take the PO, and then another deal, or whatever fits both parties. That Spurs have been very efficient at convincing players to move financially as they need, and also they have an impeccable track record of them paying the players what they are due in late career contracts.
I also am one of those posters who donīt like DeRozanīs game, but i also recall the Spurs were interested in him when he was drafted, so i do believe that they saw in him something else, other than his scoring, and i bet they are going to focus now on developing those things.
Kind of like a reverse Kawhi.
