They were debating between Idris Elba and like 4 other white guys. If they were dead set on a black guy then Chiwetel Ejiofor and a few other Br ish black dudes would have been in the conversation.
They picked Elba because he’s the best option out there.
I know there's a lot of stuff that happens in the name of "social justice" these days, but this isn't one of them. They considered a bunch of British actors and reportedly picked Idris Elba. They didn't consider a bunch of minorities only, just to make sure to give a minority the role.

Maybe they thought it would help box office wise, maybe they thought they would get "friendlier" critics, maybe they just thought it was something that it needed to be done to send a message of equality and diversity. I suppose in this instance this would be a reverse Michael Jackson. I doubt there will be a story arch for the obvious plot hole considering James Bond's sudden change of skin color. I look for consistency as do most fans. This is why it is forced.

Nothing requires him to be any race in particular, just plausibly British. Idris is very British.

Now, the reason behind those characters being white can vary among racism, pandering to a wider audience, the guys creating them also being white, etc. But it is what it is.
I'm not racist. Heck, I don't even know what race I am, but if I see a non-white Batman someday, it might be a little off putting. Not because I'm a white supremacist or some like that, but just because when I think of Batman, I think of him on a specific way. It would be the same as seeing a Superman with a moustache, or an old Spiderman, or a white Black Panther, or the last young long haired Lex Luthor we had on the last Batman v. Superman movie.

I know about that, I'm not much of a comic books nerd so I don't pay much attention to it. Also, I don't care. If other people enjoy it, then good for them. To me Spiderman is Peter Parker though.
Being white wasn't the only description of Bond as a character (or for any person for that matter). The guy who created Bond also envisioned Bond as an Englishman with black hair and a scar on his cheek. Yet, Bond has been played by Irishmen, Scotsmen, Welshmen who are sometimes blonde. Why is skin color the only variable worth highlighting? Or is it that all white people can't be told apart tbh? I don't get the argument here.
I don't know what the James Bond character was suppossed to look like, I have never seen a James Bond movie. I'm just saying that when you are used to thinking of a character on a specific way you may feel inclined on wanting to see the character resembling that image.
I'm Latin but I prefer my Spiderman to be called Peter Parker, not Miles Morales. It's a nostalgia thing.
I do like to see that the Hollywood white male bias is being adressed (although, like I said, for now is only with women and blackmen), but I think that, instead of transforming old characters, it would be better to come up with new characters and stories.
If you're going to be a strict originalist, James Bond will have to be not only white, but also so hilariously racist, sexist and phobic that it was probably considered banal even when the books were first published. Characters change over time and over media. Bond movies still have appeal because the character has changed a ton over the past five decades.
Bond started out as a reflection of British imperialism; it could be pretty interesting to flip the script to have a new Bond's being a product of colonialism. Maybe it would be more demographically accurate for the guy to be of south Asian heritage, but Elba in particular has the kind of background that could almost be applied to a new Bond wholesale -- a London-born son of parents from Ghana and Sierra Leone.
Or the new Bond could be another white guy. All he really has to be is British. The more these things change, the less of a big deal it will be in the future.
