As clear of an example of why and how "faith" is a toxic concept. It can justify ANYTHING, and using the threat of eternal torture to get others to do what you want them to do, especially children, is immoral no matter what the reason.

‘Weaponization of faith’: Examples from clergy abuse report

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A landmark grand jury report on clergy abuse in six Roman Catholic dioceses in Pennsylvania detailed how priests often used religious rituals, symbols of the faith and the threat of eternity in to groom, molest and rape children.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro called it the “weaponization of faith.”

Some of the examples cited in the report, released Tuesday, of how over 300 “predator priests,” dating back to the 1940s, used the children’s own religious faith and trust in them as religious leaders to victimize and silence them:

eh, what about youth clubs, organized sports, schools, foster families and the corrections system?

just because opportunities for child abuse can be found there hardly means that scouting, sports, education, adopting parents and the justice system poison everything they touch.

but religion isn't required to do any of that. There is nothing that organized religion can do, that can't be done without it.

That's silly. This is like saying "pride" and "dignity" are toxic concepts. You can justify awful actions in the name of pride. You can compell terrible actions by appealing to dignity or honor. You might commit disgusting crimes because of "emotion." Are you going to call emotion a toxic concept?

Seems you're stretching yourself to justify a predisposition against religion. There's nothing wrong with disliking religion but your hyperbole is off-putting and counterproductive.

It isn't hyperbole. Faith is believing without evidence.

You can literally believe anything on faith, which many use to guide them on what is true about reality, and what is not.

    It is toxic to reason.

You may argue about emotion if you wish, that is not my argument. Sorry.

The #pizzagate crowd here hasn't said one word about this.

The sheer numbers are shocking and they don't even include Philadelphia from what I gather.

That said, the Lifetime testimonial tape with the piano music was tone deaf.

That's not what you said. You said it's toxic because it can be used to justify "anything."

Bad people use a lot of things are used to justify terrible actions, that doesn't make those things toxic in and of themselves.

And it's not like religious nuts would otherwise be completely rational devotees to science if their religion didn't exist. Ignorant people tend to fill in the blanks of their own understanding with whatever makes sense to them. And manipulative people will never be without some platform to trick the ignorant.

This is the same thing Republicans do when they promote fear of Muslims, immigrants, blacks, etc. You take terrible actions, you find the most obvious trait that you (and likeminded people) don't have in common with them, and you claim that to be the fundamental reason for the action.

An immigrant hits someone with their car? "See? Immigration is dangerous!"

Catholic priests manipulate children into sex? "See? Religion is toxic!"

    It's textbook confirmation bias.

Christian Churches are the most consistent in helping really horrible situations in foreign countries imo. They may go to evangelize as well, but who the cares if they bring food, water and medicine. During natural disasters here they also consistently stay at it. I actually saw a church bus from SA still helping clean up and build in some of the poorest neighborhoods in Aransas Pass towards Rockport this summer.

The Jesus was good model still exists.

But of course many people just see Joel Olsteen or Chris (name change suggested) when someone mentions Christians. Which is understandable...

Random Guy going into one of his downward spirals and showcasing his first class bigotry and intolerance of a group of people who he doesn't understand. He's right and everyone else who is a person of faith- the vast majority of the world- is wrong and are poisoned garbage. Way to Hitler it up, RG.
