The next James Bond is black

Excited for Idris Elba for James Bond b/c I like the actor and I don't feel strongly what ethnicity/race he is, but I would have strong feelings for some other characters in literary works/other mediums, just not Bond. As far as I've read (and I haven't read a lot), he's never specifically described as white. Can someone let me know if that is the case?

Ian Fleming talked about Bond looking like piano man Hoagy Carrmicael who is white. All the books had cover art, yep, a white guy.

I would actually prefer that tbh. Make a wholly unique agent inspired by bond. That way he can be more in touch with his roots, while not stepping on the literary toes of Bond. It won't sell as much though.

I'm with you. There is no need to have a black James Bond, just have a black British Secret Service agent who has heard the stories the legend of James Bond. Maybe a few....what would Bond do in this spot?...in his head.

No Bond movie has ever been set in the 50s. A black Bond in 2020 isn't beyond the imagination of normal people.

He didn't write that explicitly in his novels, at least not a description of him as white (again, I may be wrong on this, though I do not think so). Also, cover art rarely showed an actual picture of Bond (I guess preferring to go by the written description, hence why choice words were used to describe him), but rather artistic themes or manifestations of the villains/heroines. Flemming pictured him as Carmichael, but the point of literary work, and also the lack of extreme specificity of description, is for the reader to gauge a measure their own interpretation of the character.

Don't get me wrong though, I would actually prefer a wholly new secret agent, if they went the Elba route. I also think its very doable (see the creativity of Kingsman, even though it was also based on comics).

According to Griswold, the Fleming novels take place between around May 1951,^[31] to February 1964, by which time Bond was aged 42.^[32]

I'm just saying there's a level of merit to making him black, and I don't find it all that big a deal. My issue, mainly, is with any remake for the sake for appeasing a group of people, especially those who have historically been oppressed. I don't think its a form of empowerment, but rather a cash grab. You want a black secret agent? Then make a character unique and relatable for black culture to relate with and to call their own. This is literally just a black Bond.
