2013 was the toughest sports moment for me to get over. It wasn't because the Spurs lost for the first time in the finals or because we blew the 5 point lead with like 20 seconds left that made me just stare with my mouth open stunned by what had happened. And this isn't a comment for some stupid debate about why we lost either. It was tough because Manu Ginobili after the game answered every single question and looked about as depressed and down as I had ever seen him. In that game 6 loss, you could see the passion and the love and the desire all mixed together with his disappointment and most likely resentment for himself during that one moment. Just something about that loss and seeing and hearing and in a way feeling Manu's emotions, it resonated within me.
So when we won in 2014, the first thing I did when I got back to SA was go to academy and buy myself a Spurs Championship shirt. And there were like 50 to choose from, but the one I got was Ginobili dunking over Bosh. To me, that was the ultimate moment for me as a Spurs fan and maybe the best moment in his career. And he's had so many great ones. So thank you Manu. I modeled my game (and long wild hair) after you so much so that random people would come up to me and say I played like him. Ginobili was my idol and it's been a privilege to watch him.
