Kawhi Leonard is without question a better player...not close tbh. Butttt did Kawhi offensive Game trigger the hated “ISO” ball? While extremely efficient/dominant he had tunnel vision and didn’t make others better. His PNR grams wasn’t the best abc his passing ability is his biggest weakness as a player imo.

Derozan on the other hand is a legit creator in the PNR and good playmaker with about 5 assist per game. The Spurs biggest weakness was a consistent dribble drive player and that’s even true when they had Kawhi. It hurt our shooting and without it you can’t even ignite the beautiful game offense.

Adding DeRozan makes us a balanced offensive team. We have an elite ISO scorer and also an elite scorer that can dribble drive. The defense will take a hit but the system will hopefully help hide the flaws. But will the offense be better enough to overcome? I think so..I honestly think this could be one of the best offensive Spurs teams we’ve seen in awhile

Just the simple fact that DeRozan will actually be on the court and willing to play for the Spurs makes him a better option than Leonard on offense and defense.

I agree with the comments about Kawhi and ISO ball. I'm not saying DeRozen is the guy to convert us back to the beautiful game or anything but, I do think he is will and able if we go that direction. I still think we need a 3D guy at the SF who can pass the ball. Maybe Gay can somewhat fulfill that role but, he's light on the 3 and the D. If he will buy in he's athletic enough though.

I get your use of commas: it's the pauses in your train of thought.
    It's cool.
Now learn how to use commas correctly and your ideas and comments will be much easier to translate.

We still have LaMarcus so I'm not sure we're away from the ISO ball yet.

TBH, I think ISO ball was Pop and Kawhi's way of developing a killer instinct. His next evolution was playmaking which he was supposed to incorporate last year. He probably has plenty of bbiq and skill to increase his assists and play the pick n roll better. His development is going to take a slight hit being on a completely new system and team but he by midseason or next year he should be the best player in basketball.

kawhi didnt have tunnel vision, u know when he has the ball..thats automatic basket for him..

i dunno everyone run with the narrative he has to be a playmaker to take the next step, that playmaker roll should be pg duties, his not a playmaker and doesnt need that , when u have players surrounding him who couldnt hit a basket...

everytime the spurs needed a basket, he took over... so why does he need to lob it out?

Because in the playoffs he'd be smothered in that situation and if he's not used to making a play from that... game over man.

For how great kawhitter was, the Spurs put him in those positions. Those same opportunities will be there for DD.

There was a contingent on ST that lamented/decried the evolution of Number 2 into the ball-dominant first option. In retrospect, with the decline of Tony and Manu, Pop may have had no other viable option. But the dual-iso ball of Number 2 and LMA was a style of play that I will not miss. By default DeRozan/LMA should be a better (or at least, more symbiotic) offensive pairing than Number 2/LMA. However, to be optimal, LMA needs to be less of an iso-player and more of popper/roller in the flow of the offense. It remains to be seen if that is the style that Pop tries to employ, and if so, how willingly LMA adjusts.

Yeah but you can’t have 2 iso guys on the team. One iso I think is great to have not more.

I agree with OP that DD should make the O way better. To me KL was a million times more valuable to the team as a defensive monster and hustle play guy than any of the forced offense he put up.

I would not consider LMA a strict "iso" offensive player. Sure - he takes his shots in the offense but it is more of a post up and shoot in his range. I don't see him as clearing an entire side of the floor and going one on one for most of the shot clock.

That’s a good post OP. I like what DDR brings on that side of the ball a little better than Kawhi. Defense is another story.
