Spurs would be looked at poorly if they traded and than resigned Kawhi. Raptor fans for sure would hate the Spurs for a long time and even NBA fans would hate Spurs and Kawhi.

Spurs got Demar in return and we have high ceiling youngsters in LW4 and Murray or whatever FA they could fetch for him plus assets. Spurs will be back in ring hunt in 2-3 years.
