He held several academic posts where he did little more than run up travel expenses and had to disappear to avoid the consequences. Employment and financial problems + Russian employees and contacts = fairly easy pickings for recruitment by Russia.

I mean I can see how western intel would want to hire a shady academic with a terrible work history and Russian contacts. It's the perfect cover to frame a coffee boy into lying to the FBI.
