There seems to be a popular opinion now that Stockton deserves all the credit for Malone's success, but not vice versa. Why?

The thing about stat padding is, you still have to be good enough to get the stats. It's not like opponents are just going to "let you" get free assists. Every stat is earned in a sense.

No one was ever accused of "point padding" were they? Unless it's a meaningless shot in garbage time, NBA players will always try to stop you from scoring, just as they'll try to stop your potential assist from scoring.

Malone was a finisher. An excellent finisher at that but his ability to create offense wasn’t that great, at least not to the level of other top scorers in nba history.

Kareem, kobe, Jordan, Lebron, wilt, dr j, Moses, dirk, shaq. These guys can all create better than Malone. He was essentially exposed in the finals twice.

Stockton actually was the engine that ran the Jazz offense. Bulls were able to embarrass the jazz because they had the best perimeter defense in the league by far. When Stockton was handcuffed Malone couldn’t do a thing about it.
