Just hits an incredible tough shot on a mad scramble play to take the lead. Then with .7 left down one, Pop has him inbounding the ball? And it’s to LMA? 25’ from the basket?

how dare you question the GOAT coach....

in before timvp or somebody else says "it works since LMA got fouled" or "what else can you draw up with 0.7 left"...

Pop was probably too busy drawing a straight line from him to the Grizz' bench so he can chortle JB's balls right at the buzzer.....

This was the same dude who had Steve Novak inbound the ball in the clutch against Portland when Novak hardly played at all.

My guess is that his thinking was along the lines

" Demar already had his shine. We need to give someone else the chance"

Pop thinks lilke an extreme liberal even during end game situations

I'm convinced Pop doesn't give a anymore. He was probably too busy thinking about dinner and what wine he was going to pair with it to realize what he was doing.

    But...hindsight

I don’t know what kind of thought process you think it’s a good idea for a guy who’s struggled this year, this game, against an ex-defensive player of the year who’s a legit 7’+ to take the last shot so far from the basket. Not only that but your other option has a couple of game winners to his name this season.

Even the yes men surrounding Pop probably thinks he’s out of his mind.

Yup, it looks bad LMA has been a huge disappointment this season. But he works hard on the floor, and he should get better at some point soon. I think Pop shows some trust on him hoping he will bounce back and play well enough so we can trade him and his horrible contract and hopefully get a couple draft picks and young player, preferably an athletic wing that can defend and spread the floor.

On the other side, LaMarcus was the first Spurs player on the court early today, before the game, shooting threes and making them.

Yeah, DeRozan inbounding the ball was strange. Few things to consider:

    1) The play was an alleyoop to Gay. Gay was to set a pick and then DeRozan lobs it hoping for the Grizzlies to switch and be slow to rotate.

    2) Gasol played so far off Aldridge that Aldridge audibled and popped out. Not a terrible decision by Aldridge -- but Gasol recovered quickly. At that point, DeRozan's only available pass was to Aldridge.

    3) With the play being an alleyoop for Gay, the logic for DeRozan inbounding is the Spurs needed three-point shooters on the court for spacing. Plus, with the son of the legendary Jaren Jackson defending the inbounder with his 7-foot-10 arms, the inbounder had to be someone with size. I can see what the coaches were thinking. You can have Belinelli or Bertans inbound the ball . . . or you can just put spacers on the court and have your best passer in DeRozan inbound the ball.

Guess that's what happens when your best scorer, most clutch player, best passer and best passer with size is all the same person. Still, though, if I'm drawing up the play, I'm giving to DeRozan for a jumper, tbqhwy.

The play was an alleyoop to Gay?

Sadly I still remember the last time Pop tried to close a game with a lob..It didn't end well.

Of course people can make ton of excuses for that last play in 2015, the clock, the refs...But trying an alleyoop vs "lob"city in playoffs ...

Pop is showing zero creativity to close games since 2013

DD is the Spurs best passer outside Gasol, who, as you would know, is injured. The inbound pass needs to be on point to give the shooter or alley-layuper-dunker any chance of getting a clean shot off. The pass is just as important as the shot.

Yeah I know the play wasn’t for Aldridge. My point is, this is why you don’t have Derozen inbounding the ball in. When/if the inbounds play falls apart, you need the one guy on your team available that can make something out of absolutely nothing...like he just did the play before!

I have no respect for Kawhi, but this is the kinda stuff that I sure made his decision to leave easier. This is the kinda stuff that keeps great players from coming to San Antonio.

Actually it reminded me of that time Ty Lue wanted Lebron to inbound a ball in a similar situation for someone else to take the last shot. Lebron said no. He overruled coach and took the last shot himself. Won the game.

    https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/l...shot-vs-kings/

Except here Derozan didn’t overrule coach.

I'm honestly not sure DD is the right guy for a quick catch and shoot which is what 0.7 seconds calls for. I'd have even less faith in it going in if he's forced to come out to the three-point line to give himself some room to get the shot off. I forget what game it was (LAL?) but DD had a play at the end of regulation drawn up that got him a wide open midrange jumper from the baseline. I thought that was the right call then but he had 2-3 seconds to get that off.

I would've drawn up a play for Davis. Has the quickest trigger on the team and probably isn't a guy MEM would expect to take the shot.

I think Pop did this on purpose, thinking Gasol will close out and most likely foul and the refs have to call a foul then cause he just got one on the other end
