Defiance is pretty standard behavior at a high school. Sure, give him a detention. But suspend or fire the teacher for numerous violations of professionalism. Kid exposed the fascist teacher.
Also, this was a conversation in progress. I'm pretty sure that the pre-recorded argument is that the hat rule is not enforced and that is why the teacher is talking about "bending" rules. He then only enforces the rule based on his aversion to his politics, which is obviously a huge abuse of power.

Nitpicking a bit here tbh if someone is throwing haymakers, I'm not going to turn the other cheek. Turning the other cheek means you don't seek retribution and also forgiving the aggressor. This man showed incredible restraint.
