Real talk, what has he done the last couple years? The spurs has had numerous assistants with very obvious contributions.

Chad, Becky, Udoka have all been great at developing talent, specially chad. Bud during his time as assistant coach orchestrated the offense. Bret Brown had a a very clear role in organizing the defense.

Since Messina arrived they started introducing a couple defensive schemes that were ultimately scrapped. Is his contribution getting Bellineli to sign for the spurs?

He holds Pop's clipboard. That's about it. Really hope our next head coach isn't on that bench. We're ed if so. None of those tools have ever used the word "no" infront of Pop. If what I think is going to happen (Gregg retires as the HC but remains in charge of the team as president/keep stealing checks) then o, Seattle.

The entire front office/coaching staff consists of nothing but yes men at the moment. The ambitious, talented people from the 2013/2014 Spurs teams have moved on leaving nothing but hanger-ons. Messina is just waiting out Pop to coach the Spurs himself. If he had an ounce of integrity he'd try to make a name for himself like Bud.

Do feel like Messina would coach the team the most like Pop is. He is the person responsible for changing the D in 2016, and that had decent results. Maybe as the top voice, he could get guys to buy in. Never been a huge fan of his though, and I certainly don't care to have him coach a rebuilding team.

Looks like this Italian plumber is being set up to take over soon. Disgusting. Pretty sure Pop is doing it so we can fail once he leaves. Explains the selfish signings and trades done in the past two years.

I turned the TV off last night. Who did the postgame interview? Either way, I bet it was really worthwhile.

Thanks for posting. Yeah, that was pretty strong stuff.

"...in this league, you gotta make the 3's."

Yeah, that's it, Pop. You lost to the ing Kings because they've ruined the game and turned it into a 3-point contest. So there's nothing you can do but hope yours fall.

I don't see it going this way. I think either Ime gets the job, or they wait out coach Bud's contract.

I don't really see Messina as the Spurs head coach either. He strikes me as not a great NBA fit, in spite of his accolades. Now an NBA coach has to manage egos as much as (more than) the X's and O's, and I don't see him in that mold. Pop's the father figure of the league, and has all the big-name players' respect so what he says carries some clout. Messina wouldn't be received quite the same way, I don't think, for building this team for the future.

Would they jump over Ime and give it to Becky? I know it would piss off those in line in front of her, but I could see Pop making that sort of a statement by bringing in the league's first female head coach to replace him.

In a player's league, the Head Coach position has to be held by a friend of the players, better if a bro', former player. Knowledge of the game is irrelevant (there are assistants for that). Messina is known for being extremely tough with the players, much in your face kind of at ude, and with minimal flexibility on who's the boss. He is not the type that would go well with today's players.

He had legendary success in international basket (and his knowledge is indeed at the apex of the profession -ask any professional coach, everybody steals his sets even in the NBA as Brad Stevens said), but under totally different conditions: in the Euroleague the player has little to no say, as literally everybody is replaceble the following day. Do your job as I design it, or tomorrow you are gone. Hence, the better coach usually wins.

In the NBA, no star player is replaceabale "tomorrow", hence Messina is not HC material in this NBA. Plus, no american player will respect a foreign coach. Those who played some international compe ion maybe, but the whole team? No way.

If Spurs give the job to Becky it will be only because she is a female. That would be a disgrace, really.

2016 the Spurs had the #1 defense in the league by a country mile. But we also had Duncan, Leonard, and Green. So it really boils down to what kind of talent you have on defense versus guys like De got who just don't give a damn about defense.

The Bucks the last 2 years were horrible on defense.Kidd had all that length and athleticism and he was forcing his players to trap,i you not, constant double teams for no reason at the 3 point line.Capable teams were dunking the ball with 2 passes.

Bud just said, press on the ball handler, move sensibly in space, fill the passing lanes, give up the 3 if you have to,just not the corner 3.Just like that the Bucks are the best defense in the league.

Coaching is still as important as what players you have.Giannis and the Bucks could not perform cause of their coach. And whatever defensive scheme the Spurs come up with this year, you can't hide Forbes,DDR,or Patty,or Beli in defense.
