The massive coverage based on the mistaken iden y is likely what pushed the actual killers to turn themselves in. It's also lead to increased coverage of the actual killer, when there might not have been before.

So while mistakes like this are always regrettable, corrections have been issued and the truth is now known. In the meantime, the family has probably gotten more support (emotionally and financially) than they otherwise would. The ends don't justify the means, but the means also didn't really have a negative impact on anyone.

I'm not sure why, then, this is such a pressing issue for you. Do you think there was some broad damage to white men as a result of the mistaken iden y?

It would've never been a story if the eyewitness said the perpetrator was a "black male". And even if the witness was correct there is no reason to give this more attention.
