in the late summer of 2017, a few months before the Justice Department filed suit, Trump ordered Gary Cohn, then the director of the National Economic Council, to pressure the Justice Department to intervene[in the proposed AT&T/Time-Warner merger.] According to a well-informed source, Trump called Cohn into the Oval Office along with John Kelly, who had just become the chief of staff, and said in exasperation to Kelly, “I’ve been telling Cohn to get this lawsuit filed and nothing’s happened! I’ve mentioned it fifty times. And nothing’s happened. I want to make sure it’s filed. I want that deal blocked!”

Fox News ed the Stormy Daniels payoff and the National Enquirer catch and kill stories before the election:

When Shine assumed command at Fox, the 2016 campaign was nearing its end, and Trump and Clinton were all but tied. That fall, a FoxNews.com reporter had a story that put the network’s journalistic integrity to the test. Diana Falzone, who often covered the entertainment industry, hadobtained proof that Trump had engaged in a sexual relationship in 2006 with a pornographic film actress calling herself Stormy Daniels. Falzone had worked on the story since March, and by October she had confirmed it with Daniels through her manager at the time, Gina Rodriguez, and with Daniels’s former husband, Mike Moz, who described multiple calls from Trump. Falzone had also amassed e-mails between Daniels’s attorney and Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen, detailing a proposed cash settlement, accompanied by a nondisclosure agreement. Falzone had even seen the contract.

But Falzone’s story didn’t run—it kept being passed off from one editor to the next. After getting one noncommittal answer after another from her editors, Falzone at last heard from LaCorte, who was then the head of FoxNews.com. Falzone told colleagues that LaCorte said to her, “Good reporting, kiddo. But Rupert wants Donald Trump to win. So just let it go.” LaCorte denies telling Falzone this, but one of Falzone’s colleagues confirms having heard her account at the time.

Despite the discouragement, Falzone kept investigating, and discovered that the National Enquirer, in partnership with Trump, had made a “catch and kill” deal with Daniels—buying the exclusive rights to her story in order to bury it. Falzone pitched this story to Fox, too, but it went nowhere. News of Trump’s payoffs to silence Daniels, and Cohen’s criminal attempts to conceal them as legal fees, remained unknown to the public until the Wall Street Journal broke the story, a year after Trump became President.

As I remember it, the catch and kill had nothing to do with Daniels. That was Karen McDougall. Cohen paid Daniels directly.

    Yup.

Any take on the alleged financial fraud outlined by Cohen? It is looking like Trump committed some pretty garden variety felonies in presenting inflated asset valuations to a bank for purposes of getting a loan. (a 20 million dollar mansion was reported as being worth 290M)

After reading an article about it, it definitely was worth much more than 5-7 million in 2012 but probably wasn't a 250 million property. Since they had done the groundwork to have it replatted into eleven 20 acre parcels (one with the 50,000 sq ft historic mansion on it, and only thirty minutes from New York City) pricing it for a finacial statement would be pretty ambiguous. Not a complete nothingburger, but close.

It was 10-20 mill for tax purposes... 290 million when presenting financials to a bank for a loan.

(shrugs) Mueller got a good look at them.

Not sure if a full appraisal would be done on that particular property, as it was simply part of a basket of assets, and not pledged specifically.

As an auditor, there were a few other things in the financials that stood out to me as risk factors, such as large baskets of "other" assets, and especially LLC valuations which tend to be hazy at best, and when real estate is involved... ish.

This is the kind of thing that Trump is shielding in his tax returns. Dude's financial problems and bankruptcies made credit very hard for him to get, increasing the pressure for aggressive valuations.

I would note that german police did a search of Deutsche banks offices a few months back. No one really knows what they were looking for yet, but if anyone would know what the bank was given for those potential loans, the bank would. Trump owes them a lot of money, so that wasn't the only time they were given financials.

ok, so let' say it really is worth 250 million, as he said to the bank.

He is paying property taxes on a valuation of about 10-20 million.

    ooops.

Coincidental, no doubt. It's not a bribe unless there was a written contract or a taped conversation describing the quid pro quo.
