Defining the general welfare as what you personally need is preposterous. So is criticizing a particular program because it does not tend to solve all related issues.

Just say you don’t want to pay for it because you don’t like it. Pretending there’s some bigger principle at stake is bull .
Putting on a cape for Special Olympics but not being willing to fund it privately is part and parcel of being a liberal blowhard.

Should taxpayers pay for the basketball shoes of poor kids who want to play basketball? Isn't that general welfare? You brought the preamble into the picture. You made it about a bigger principle.

Heartwarming event, no? I feel I'm much better off watching a Special Olympics highlight than reading about our military (hallowed be thy name) spending 1.5 trillion on another toy that doesn't benefit me directly.
I think that's great. You should dig into your pockets and fund it without needing everyone else who doesn't want to watching to pitch in as well.

Why do you think this is an argument about the Special Olympics vs the department of defense? Why the false dilemma? Can you justify spending on the Special Olympics without comparing to something you don't like?

It’s not like we’re discussing a revenue stream that crowds out other priorities.
You still haven't justified it. Why should the taxpayers continue to fund the Special Olympics?

Sure, why not? Let’s pay for their lunch too.

It’s not my job to justify it, but it costs little to do and people like it.

What harm does it do? Does it do good?

What worthy priority is crowded out by it?

If the people like it and their representatives fund it, what’s the problem?

You haven’t proved there’s any problem with it, other than you think it frivolous.

I’m not talking about worker control of the workplace or state control of the means of production.

    What are you talking about?

Oh right, social spending in a capitalist country.

Similarly, I would like hawks who think Isis and China are imminent threats that are poised to take over Murrica fund the military out of their pocket.

I usually bring up defense spending to highlight the inconsistency in conservative arguments concerning spending. It seems every other form of "spending" is socialist waste personified except for the ridiculous amount of tax payer dollars that go toward "defending" the USA against the boogeyman of the decade. I never hear a peep from conservatives about military spending, but yet they have no shortage of complaints about EBT and Medicaid. I just find their "fiscally responsible" position hypocritical because they have nothing to say when the Air Force spends 300 grand on coffee cups and trillions on outdated conventional weapons, but everything to say about the "welfare queen" whipping out her EBT card at the local Ralphs.

The spending for defense is clearly laid out in the cons ution. Putting private organizations like the Special Olympics into a "general welfare" category is stretching the concept and it's a slippery slope.

But your argument "there's waste in defense spending so might as well fund Special Olympics" is a non sequitur.

I take it you didn't donate.

Let's me know how much you really care. It's just a debate. Relax, you can save your money for a bottle of Kendall Jackson.

I never said it doesn't count. Why do you and your ilk here need to put words in the mouths of people you disagree with? Can't you disagree with me without needing to rewrite my side of the argument?

The gripe was about 18m being taken away. Show me a thread were I ed about the Special Olympics being funded. I'll wait (this one doesn't count).

I'm basically asking, Why pick on the Special Olympics and not on the 1.5 trillion spent on the bloated F35 project? Or our presence in Afghanistan (wasn't getting Bin Laden the primary goal? Yeah, how long has it been now? Why is there even a single US troop stationed there?). Yes, this thread isn't about defense spending, but again, in every debate I've ever had, heard, or read about the budget, conservatives never, ever demand that defense spending is tightened up. The cuts are always toward social programs that actually might help people instead of toward something that kills goat herders. Why is that?

I haven't seen anyone demand that Special Olympics be defunded. I just don't see a problem with defunding it. When Trump pulled troops from Syria, I didn't have a problem with it. Many on the left did. If he pulls everyone from Afghanistan, I wouldn't have a problem with it. If they said the F-35 project is scrapped. I'd not have a problem with it. However it someone said "Oh my god they defunded the F-35 project" I'd state it's not really an issue, more like a money pit. When is the last time air superiority did anything for us and why can't we have that with cheaper planes than the money hog?

lol you complaining about unfair recapitulation.

    I don't think I misrepresented you.

You get all pedantic when you come off the worse, and waste your effort in parsing your own remarks.

Exactly no one is fooled by that.

You're inferring meaning into my words that I didn't intend and arguing against it like a strawman argument. ty way to debate, but par for this place.
