I can think of another investigation based on oppo research that was going on in 2016, even got leaked to the press during the campaign.

You are asking for a level of consideration that modern conservatives, or at least the ones that post here, are capable of.
Trump Derangement Syndrome is a real thing, but Fox "news" is probably wrong about who is suffering from it and what the symptoms are, like they are wrong about a lot of things, in various tragicomic and frequent ways.
