Also the 5 year anniversary of 5
Daaang Ace. You always bring us something good.
That was one of those events where you will always remember where you were when the last buzzer sounded. The city of SA was electric during the playoffs, and people had those stupid loud flags hanging on all their car windows. We had a living room full of friends, and we all went NUTS when they won. I can still call any of them and say, "Remember when?"
I just realized the only le out of the first four that I was in SA for was 2003. We used to visit Mexico during the summers when I was younger. For the '99 le, I kind of remember watching it with my dad and brothers. They didn't show NBA games live in Mexico at the time so it was a replay really late at night. I was only 10 and struggling to stay awake but they woke me up for the ending.
My dad was never a huge Spurs fan and has kind of lost interest in basketball over the years, but Spurs fever was so widespread that first year that even he got into it for that run, tbh.
I'll never forget that entire season, which happened during my freshman year of college. By the time the Finals started, I was taking summer school classes and doing football conditioning to get ready for our upcoming season (my redshirt freshman year). I was tired after conditioning sessions, but never too tired to watch our boys beat the Knicks.
I still remember it like yesterday.. watching game 5 at Cici's Pizza.. Going ape when Avery hit that jumper, running all the way home slapping stop signs.. bending back the Express News cage thing and stealing all of the newspapers at 4 AM. Good times![]()
Dude that’s crazy. I was in Monterrey Nuevo León during game 5. We were actually able to watch the game live, i was at my grandmas and i believe they had cable.
We popped fireworks outside after the spurs won. Unsurprisingly all my cousins in Mexico were bulls fans but they said they liked the spurs too.
but even though I wasn’t in San Antonio, I was just so happy they won. But it felt so cool going back to San Antonio a week later and seeing all the billboards signs and car flags. The spurs were being repped all throughout the city. It was really cool.
As great as '14 was I still think '99 is the best. It got that huge monkey off our back of not being able to win a championship.
this, &
And we all still had innocence because 9/11 hadn't happened yet. America was still relative virgin to terrorism.
14 best SI cover and story saying that Spurs might have played best basketball ever-agreed
They did. And if you ask me they are one of the best teams in NBA history. That team should be top 5 all time. They don't get enough credit, the entire NBA has copied them
My older brother and I had to watch the 2005 Game 7 late af too so I always figured they just weren't shown live there. Maybe it was a cable thing though because we didn't have it since our house was vacant the whole year except for the Summers.
I used to stay for my entire Summer break so I kind of missed the aftermath. My cousins went to the parade and I remember them telling me how badass it was. All the footage I've ever seen of it confirms it too. Kinda wish I could've been here for that.
I remember people literally stopped driving their cars on the free way to get out and celebrate. And the best part was that nobody was even mad at them for doing it. EVERYBODY was celebrating. It was a crazy time.
I remember that game like it was yesterday. Avery shoots 80% and Robinson was pushing 20 rebounds. The Spurs got held to around 70 points in Game 2, and came back to hold the T-Wolves to the exact same in Game 3. That game was a beat down.
And that other clip talking about 35,000 people in the arena. That's not just 35,000 tickets sold - the seats were full. Not like these days. I said it before, the whole town was Spurs crazy.
"It was twenty years ago today Sgt. Popper taught the band to play"
The reminiscing era is upon us.
Sadly its all we have right now
I feel about the '99 Spurs the same way this hombre feels about his beer.

Well said!
I think I did cry. 23 years as a fan and that was the payoff. Never thought at the time we’d see the string of success that followed, at least to the extent that it has.
