When Lebron leaves the Cavs they win about 4 games a season.. When Leonard left the Spurs they still almost won 50 and made the playoffs.. So our roster, and coach hung in there just fine. Raptors will end up with nothing by July. A finals appearance is nice, but the Nets had 2 in a row, and just a few years later were moving the team due to lack of interest. Raps will be back to being the number 1 ignored team in basketball soon enough..
Wrong, of course. If Leonard leaves, the Raps will gain $21.3 million to spend elsewhere. That's Leonard's player option cost under his existing contract.
Compare that to the Spurs' situation with DeRozan. His contract is for $27.3 million next season, no option.
As far as the season just concluded, the Spurs traded a $23.1 million Leonard contract for a $27.3 million DDR contract. That isn't all there was to the trade, but still. It's arguable that it was not wise to take on a greater financial obligation for a Leonard replacement than the team had been paying for Leonard, himself. If it was judged that a trade was inevitable, so be it, but there should have been a serious effort to at least look for some cost savings in the process. It's supposed to be a business, not a charity.
