Because that FO has a huge ego
Oh my you can tell Kawhi > derozan? I’m sure you’re the only one to know that. In fact, I wouldn’t be able to tell without you telling me. But now that you mentioned it i think it’s true.
Man, I guess the spurs really shouldn’t have traded Kawhi for no reason at all. I mean, he was just second in mvp voting, won a finals mvp and two dpoy. Why would they trade him at all? Do you know why?
Wasn't arguing that they should not have traded him only that they panicked and took a bad deal.
You say they had no leverage of course they didn't because they didn't want it to drag on and deal deal with the negative media attention... because drama is not the Spurs way... It speaks to the great culture and if anything I can respect that part but the bull spin that this was the best they could do and they had no leverage makes me question your reasoning which I normally respect outside of your obvious bias against Achilles...
But the ball movement

He had an appendectomy around the end of the season. He confirmed what many of us suspected when he was out longer than usual that it had ruptured before surgery. He was upgraded to questionable for game 1 but they decided to keep him out. Nurse said he expects he’ll be active for game 2.
I give that post an A grade
So you know that the raptors will offer anouby or siakim if the spurs just play hard to get? Who were the raptors going against? Were they worried that the spurs will just screw this and take the poo poo platter from the lakers? Have you ever negotiated? The raptors were totally fine with keeping their roster intact. There was no pressure no expectations. All the pressure was on the spurs and everyone knew it because kawhis camp made it public.
There’s only maybe 4-5 players that would have been a somewhat even trade with kawahi. No matter what the spurs were ed.
COngrats on being the only non re ed lakers fan on this site.
GS really needs game 2. Putting Durant back in now will have its issues
Do you know the Raptors would not have offered an or sia?
Yes they were very much under pressure, even if it was self induced. Raptors / Raptor Fan were tired of being in playoffs but never getting far. GM seemed super motivated to make a splash.
The premise isn't the Spurs made a fantastic trade. The premise is that the Spurs were fleeced because they didn't wait. The onus of proof is on him, not me.
And no, there was a huge uproar over trading derozan as he was the first star player to willingly resign with the raptors. The risk is that they got rid of the most beloved star in franchise history for a one year rental of a guy who was wiling to sit out and force a trade to LA.
It was a smart move by ujiri. He knew the raptors maxed out its potential. If nephew stays, then great. If he leaves then they tried and can reboot the team.
There is nothing I can prove... And neither can you. Facts are it was not a good trade. No way to prove they could get more it's just the gamble I argued they should take. Use the Lakers as leverage and, threaten tiosend him there if Raptors won't up the ante... Lakers have been dumb as ... Sure they would have blindly obliged... But because they made it known they weren't sending him west and especially Los Angeles Clips or Lakers they ed their leverage...
Of course you don't get fair value for Kawhi you never do for a top 1-5 player but you don't have to get fleeced either...
Exactly. While Toronto didn't have to make a move, ujiri wanted to make one. Badly.
IMO.
As Killa noted, we are all just speculating here.
I am in the camp that says the Spurs did not have to make a move at that exact time. Yes Nephew put them in a corner. But they were not pinned in yet. I, like Killa wonder what other teams might have done had the Spurs been willing to play poker. Loved that they laughed off the initial offer from en lement minded ic. But have to believe ic may have come back with a counter had the Spurs held out and gotten other teams offering something. Celts tight assed Ainge? Ya true. Philly is one that might have been willing to up the ante quite a bit. Or Clipps, altho I didn't want Harris. Point being, Spurs did not HAVE to move when they did.
Of course if CIA Popped isn't married to Patty Mills, we may have gone much farther this year including the playoffs. Which could have made the DD trade much better. Just speculatin.![]()
Great post it was all I am saying and is a fair point.
DD is a good player at less salary I would like him even more.
It's all speculative I just believe you get less when you are extra motivated to move something right away.
Maye fleeced is a bit strong but definitely more than just they lost the trade, because there was no way to win when you are losing a player like Kawhi... Hut Siakam even before Game 1 makes the loss much less of one...
I don't remember you valuing Kawhi very high last summer when he was on the trading block. You thought I was crazy calling him the second best player in the league when he might actually be #1 now.
lol today's NBA where you need two days off while no team travel is scheduled.
Purdle, so far, has been a much better prospect than OG, and was the best option available outside Siakam(who wasn't available). I don't know why ST is obsessed with OG, like he is this amazing prospect.
Well duh. Anytime to trade a top 10 player it’s going to be a bad trade, let alone a top 3. Teams never trade a top player without it being necessary and it never brings anything close to comparable value. It doesn’t take Kawhi making the finals to know this.
It’s stupid the roaches are coming out now to say how stupid the spurs were because Kawhi made the finals, as if the raptors or making it, say if siakim broke a leg or Lowry got knocked out would somehow make it a better trade.
What leverage are the lakers. Don’t send me your semi garbage because the lakers are going to send me worse garbage?
Nope Finals doesn't change anything
I said it at the time of the trade and I said it now.
Finals just make it look worse because Siakam broke out who was player I insisted on... Or no deal.

No doubt Ujiri wanted to make the trade, I would be all over it if I can get a top 3 player by giving up a borderline All-Star. But he was under no pressure to do so.
Kawhi didn't necessarily increase his value much during the regular season. He was always injury managing himself, showing just enough to justify the max, but did his value necessarily increase? Not really, because, again, his camp made it clear he wanted to be in LA.
If the Raptors making the finals didn't make them the clear cut winner to sign Nephew now (people are still speculating he is going to the Clippers), if an entire country is treating him like a God and willing to sacrifice their virgin daugthers for him don't make him want to stay in Toronto, what chance would the Celtics or Philly have in keeping him? It would be even less of a chance for weaker teams to do so. As for the Clippers, they can get him without giving up anything at all, why up the ante?
So what is your point, that Spurs had a bad trade? No ! The 6ers had a bad trade involving Barkley, ditto Lakers and Shaq, or Grizzlies with MVPau, or Bucks with Kareem. I wanted the Spurs to hold out too, but reality is that Nephew and his crew isn't going to help the Spurs at all, they made sure they want to nuclear bomb the Spurs organization, and the actions the last few days showed it.
