What was wrong with Grant and Garfield?
I didn't say there was anything wrong with either, but Grant was beset with corruption, inep ude and scandal.
Garfield, like Cleveland was a genteel reformer and increased Presidential power too.
Grant oversaw a successful reconstruction that could've failed miserably. He inherited the corrupt system.
Haven't read on Garfield lately; but the consensus is that he was a good president.

Kentucky didn't ratify the 13th Amendment until the mid 1970s.
Look, I like US Grant and I loved his book, but it's not controversial whatsoever to say Grant's appointees -- many of them -- were crooked/incompetent.

Andrew Johnson was horrible, but it's not realistic to blame all US Grant's problems on him.
Considering the country could've very easily continued the Civil War and how quickly the South had their rights reinstated, I should say so.
A problem in essentially every presidential administration.
There's better and worse, surely. The consensus on US Grant was that he was a weak president with a notably corrupt and incompetent government.
